Hale, South Hale, Zealand, Guyot and the Bonds

I just wanted to share a unique and enjoyable route with anyone that is interested. Charlie, Scott, and I took a day off on Thursday (3/18/10) to do a rather long traverse - Little River Road in Twin Mountain to Lincoln Woods. It was billed as 23.4 miles on trail, but we executed a nifty...

Where Are Good Spots for Close-up Views of The Captain?

I was thinking something simpler. The Captain is a destination for rock climbers just as El Capitan in Yosemite is a destination for rock climbers. The names are too similar not to be related, and they are both steep granite faces. Does anyone agree with me?

    rangeley 6 pack options

Just a note for clarification purposes: The "6 pack region" is generally known as the area NW of Stratton where there are 6 peaks below 4,000' on the NEHH list. While there may be six 4,000'ers near Rangeley, these peaks are quite different than the true 6 pack. Either way, it's BYOB.

Where Are Good Spots for Close-up Views of The Captain?

There are some good views of it through the trees as you approach it on that fire road. The best time would be late autumn when there are fewer leaves on the trees. I can't recall if there are views, but climbers sometimes make use of a slide on the right side of the valley as you get close to...

    #6 (3315') & Sandy Bay (3110') (ME)

For Attean Mtn, you should check in with John Baillargeon at "John's Four Seasons" lodgings in Jackman. He's been up there quite a few times as a lifelong resident and hunting guide. The phone number is available on the internet. He's also got some nice, cheap places to camp and a decent...

Pisgah, Indian Steam, Cow (no Boil)--ME

I came down the way you went up Pisgah about a month ago - that is a great old hidden logging road by the bend in the road, huh? Aside from the cliffs, I think this is the easiest approach. Unfortunately, you missed the spectacular views from the swath just a quarter mile north. There is also a...

Spotted (still no Boil :( )--ME

Not bad for a back-up plan, Jim. I took the same course that you did - tried Kennebago River Road and found it gated, then navigated some sketchy dirt roads behind Dodge Pond up past Spotted Mountain Road to a gravel pit/shooting range. Tried to follow the old roads and trails shown on the topo...

    Spencer Road in norther Maine?

I drove the whole length of that road averaging about 40 MPH a few weeks ago. Aside from the tenuously washed-out culvert near Three Slide Mtn that Bigmoose mentioned, any passenger car should have no trouble. The eastern end has seen a lot of logging activity recently, and is wide and smoothly...

Plane crash on Fort: article in the Globe

Here are a couple of closer shots of the wreckage from 2007: http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2685778680094558203zvJbzo http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2986031600094558203adOGjg It is not too straightforward to find the wreckage from the summit - we never would have found it if we hadn't...

    NEng 3k Finishers

I just wanted to drop a line to say thanks to a few people. My last hike was dedicated to a few of the pioneers of New England bushwhacking that I have had the pleasure of "crossing paths" with: Jim Crawford, Tom Sawyer, Art Josephson, Dennis Spurling, John Swanson, Roy Schweiker, and Dennis...

Northern Lites (the snowshoe, not the Aurora Borealis)

I've got a pair but this hasn't happened to me. YET. I'm on my second winter of use, and I probably have 300 miles on them so far. The side wings of the front cleats on mine just plain sheared off at about 200 miles. N.L. customer support (consisting of Russ - the owner, and his wife) told me...

wNEHH Finish - Sugarloaf / Spaulding / Abraham Traverse 02-14-09

Good luck - don't let the snow patrol catch you! Wish I could join you, but I've got a race scheduled for that day. I might be hiking something fun on Sunday, though...

    S#!*loaf & the Bigalows -- 1/17/09

Nice WORK on the Bigelows. That's a hell of an effort at solo trailbreaking. Here's a hint for Sugarloaf: Start at the main lodge, find the Burnt Mountain hiking trail, and follow that to the col. From there, it is less than a mile bushwhack to the top of Sugarloaf. If you're lucky, you'll find...

Coulda used your help on North Jackson this past Saturday, Michael! Saw your name in the jar. What a nice peak... saw 4 moose bedded down up there along the way.

    the captain

The Captain in winter? I really hope you know what you're doing. Here's a hint, if you have to ask, then you have NO IDEA what you're getting into. I approached it from the bowl to the south, and in winter it will likely take you over 3 hours just to get to the first real bushwhacking this way...

    Success Pond Rd. in Winter?

Two weeks ago, Success Pond Road was plowed all the way to the camps at Success Pond. I parked on the side of the road where the access to the Notch Trail begins, followed a snowmobiled path to the summer parking area, and made my way up the Notch Trail a good ways. There were directions to the...

    Adk p50 list

Interesting. Just out of curiosity, how can a pond or a lake be a saddle? Boreas Pond, Fawn Lake, and others are listed in the "saddle" column. I haven't checked the quad maps, so the info here could well be correct, but I'm just interested in the theory of how a standing body of water that has...

    Hiking Symbol Sticker?

There were some good ones in there. I especially liked the white blaze on the green backdrop - nice and simple. What I don't understand is all of the wiener-dog stickers on page 2 or 3. Since when have wiener-dogs come to symbolize hiking and camping?
