Mud season trail closures - new to me

I don't like mandatory closures, but nowadays the trails are getting trashed during shoulder season. There are a lot of places that need to be left alone for a few weeks while the footbed (and adjacent ground) is vulnerable. The resulting damage is lasting. I think a lot of the standard 4K...

New Hampshire snow in the 3000'-4000' range?

I wouldn't necessarily blame the Grid for the shoulder season destruction of the trails, but there is a lot of Grid-influenced behavior that isn't helping. Microspikers do a LOT of damage to the trails when they're dodging monorail and therefore ripping up root balls and duff alongside the...

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

It'll be interesting to see if something similar ever happens to other currently favored "renewable" solutions, which are partially sourced from devastating rare earth mineral mining and from areas using slave labor.

New Hampshire snow in the 3000'-4000' range?

In my opinion, this is a good time to give most of the standard 4K approaches a break. Surface conditions can be awful, but more importantly, foot traffic on thawing trails (and on the sides of trails when avoiding mud/snow/ice) causes long-term damage. A good Grid strategy is to get April...

Mr Pizza in Gorham is Closing (Now Reopened under new owners)

And yet you and others dance around the "violations" for "compliance." It's almost as if the Mills administration was "enforcing" things that would be unconscionable in 2019 or 2022. But, let's memory hole the whole thing and blame it on a second-rate cable news channel. I wish them well in...

Mr Pizza in Gorham is Closing (Now Reopened under new owners)

Looks like they had a few citations, but none significant enough to fail inspection. If you search the address you provided, they passed every inspection, including the one you pasted. peakbagger, according to the Town of Gorham web site, it is indeed the former owner of Sunday River Brewing...

Mr Pizza in Gorham is Closing (Now Reopened under new owners)

If you still support shut downs and mandates, you're on an increasingly lonely island. Cheers to the small businesses who survived those awful times.

Mr Pizza in Gorham is Closing (Now Reopened under new owners)

Where are the "health rules" that the dining establishment violated? I ate there in 2020 and witnessed a clean, safe operation. I am glad that Mr. Pizza is coming back. Let's not slander the new owners by implying they were running an unsanitary operation.

Before you slander the new Mr. Pizza owners, perhaps you can tell us when you were there and what "health rules" they violated?

Mr Pizza in Gorham is Closing (Now Reopened under new owners)

Looks like renovations are in progress by the former owners of Sunday River Brewing Company (target reopening of May 15). They stood up for personal choice against the Governor of Maine a few years ago and ended up being forced to sell their business (and the administration apparently banned...

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

The six New England states (with minor exceptions, such as eastern Maine) are powered by a single grid (operated by ISO-New England), which in turn is interconnected to the New York grid.

    Less People Hiking?

Still seemed like a good number of folks out on Saturday. Appalachia full at around 7:30, Cog very busy, and lots of folks traversing with July packs/gear, despite deep snowpack below treeline. Fortunately weather and luck held, or else we'd be reading about some of them.

Hal Graham (Trailwrights, BRATTS founder) has passed away.

Sad news for the New Hampshire hiking trails community this week. Harold M. Graham, 84 - Laconia Daily Sun If you don't know who Hal was, he spent decades doing trail maintenance across the state. He was involved in the founding of the AMC NH Chapter Volunteer Trail Crew, the Trailwrights, and...

    Snowshoes??

I haven't been through there in a few months, but last I knew there was a sign on Livermore near the Greeley Ponds junction stating that skis or snowshoes are required on Livermore during winter. Fortunately, freshly groomed trails make for great snowshoeing!

    Snowshoes??

Snowshoes or skis are required on Livermore Road during ski season. That leaves a mess for anyone else who wants to hike the trail. This applies year-round, but if you're not leaving the trail in equal or better shape than you found it, you should probably turn around. Mountain snowshoes are...

Cannon Mountain Tram replacement in the news

Large sums were being dangled from the COVID American Rescue Plan Act, so some folks figured it made sense to build a new tramway (even though the tramway was closed at the time due to COVID concerns). Since then, it appears politicians are tripping over themselves to appropriate a large sum of...

Cannon Mountain Tram replacement in the news

This is a manufactured crisis. Just over two years ago, Cannon's GM was going on the record that the tramway was only halfway through it's engineered lifespan and "only" needed $3 million of upgrades in the next half decade. Now suddenly taxpayers need to spend $25 million for a new lift...
