    Hotel on Mt Washington??!!

Hmm...North Country native who has kept the Cog railway running for 33 years, rescued Bretton Woods ski area, rescued Bretton Woods golf course, and rescued the Mt. Washington Hotel, wants to build a hotel on private property. Clearly they have no idea what they're doing. Don't they know their...

    Saddleback Mountain Sale

Mad River Glen has a northeastern exposure that acts as a catcher's mitt for snow, whereas Saddleback has a northwestern exposure, which can leave it more vulnerable to wind. They had no snowmaking when they started. There were some pretty lean snow years in the 1930s-50s (multiple winters...

    Saddleback Mountain Sale

What do you base that on? Mad River Glen opened in the late 1940s, when New England had a terrible stretch of natural snow years. New England natural snow ski areas have fared much better in recent years than they did during the first few decades of lift served skiing in New England. A...

RIP - Moriah Brook Suspension Bridge

The growing destruction of hiking trails and related structures in the WMNF is extremely troubling. We need *more* well maintained trails and associated structures. The bridge removal trend has perhaps received a pass due to the last few dry summers, but when we inevitably get another wet one...

Why are there still summit registers?

I disagree. A landowner should not be mandated to clearly mark flagging tape on their property in order to protect it from hikers taking it down.

Why are there still summit registers?

With regard to summits, I agree that it's a good idea to have something marketing the highpoint, as the impact of people searching probably far exceeds a few pieces of metal in a tree. With regard to flagging, I think folks should avoid taking down flagging tape unless they know it to be...

Things are heating up over ATV trails in Nash Stream

Spin? Fact: The state and landowner have ignored key parts of the agreement. Fact: The state and landowner closed trails that were, with our Federal tax dollars, to be ensured maintained and open to public use. Fact: The check to the landowner was well in excess of a million Federal tax...

    Trail maintenance etiquette

In theory, WMNF volunteers are only asked to work on their trail two days per year, which means a blowdown could sit there for a very, very long time if no one else touches it, resulting in trail creep, herd paths, etc. Removing blowdowns is just one of many duties volunteer maintainers have...

    Trail maintenance etiquette

I think it's very important to note that there are folks who have ad hoc agreements with various organizations. For instance, there is one NETC/VFTT poster who regularly does axe blowdown removal throughout the WMNF and has received an award from the WMNF for his hard work.

FYI: Northern Pass High Voltage Transmission Project

Here's an article with background about the Balsams and the NP involvement: http://www.newenglandskiindustry.com/viewstory.php?storyid=395 For those who don't remember, the Balsams was sold to the current ownership to block Northern Pass, and SPNHF fundraising dollars were used. In addition...

New Hampshire HB 1569 to Impact Volunteer Trail Maintenance Groups

New Hampshire HB 1569 to Impact Volunteer Trail Maintenance Groups

That is correct. At the time of the Sunapee leasing in 1998, there was a handshake agreement that the proceeds would be used to provide Cannon improvements for 10-15 years, then would be spent on state parks/forest throughout the state. We're now approaching 20 years and Cannon has actually...

New Hampshire HB 1569 to Impact Volunteer Trail Maintenance Groups

DRED could have very easily asked the Legislature for permission to tap into a large revenue stream that DRED controls (about $3 million over the past 5 years). It appears they would prefer to take money from volunteers rather than ensure that revenue stream is used effectively. Yes...

New Hampshire HB 1569 to Impact Volunteer Trail Maintenance Groups

There are admission fees charged at other state properties, however one can argue they fund the base facilities (such as the picnic area and playground at the Kearsarge trailhead). DRED has the money to fund a $40K/year policy if they really want it. It's despicable if they genuinely think...

New Hampshire HB 1569 to Impact Volunteer Trail Maintenance Groups

No, what you're reading are legitimate concerns raised by posters who have donated thousands of hours of hard labor in our state parks across the state for decades. At least two of the posters have developed successful volunteer organizations that have made significant improvements to trails in...

New Hampshire HB 1569 to Impact Volunteer Trail Maintenance Groups

There is an inaccurate notion that DRED is self-funded and thus starved for cash. This is untrue, as DRED does indeed receive funding from the General Fund. Yet, under this legislation as written, volunteer groups would have to pay DRED to maintain DRED's properties. Volunteer groups have...

New Hampshire HB 1569 to Impact Volunteer Trail Maintenance Groups

There have been e-mails going around about this, but I wanted to post this to alert other trail maintainers of legislation that was just introduced a few days ago. HB1569 Anyone involved with groups who volunteer in New Hampshire State Forests/Parks should be aware of this, especially: "The...

    Winter in the Belknaps

Right...Boulder Trail on Belknap is rougher, but the Boulder Loop Trail on Major can be vexing too. Straightback gets a reasonable amount of use in winter (NETC report as recent as yesterday in fact). It's not uncommon for Mack to see some snowmobile use.
