Winter Great Gully + Mt Adams?

Many years ago there was an accident report in Appalachia (don't remember whether I read it or wrote it :)) of three hikers swept by an avalanche on the Great Gully Trail. That is the only one I can remember on that trail.

Tips for hiking the NH 4000-Footers

Definitely agree with Stan! A good friend finished her winter NEHH on Goose Eye, because that is how things worked out.

Tips for hiking the NH 4000-Footers

I may have missed it (your list is long), but I see nothing about safety: The mountain will be there next year; make sure you are. Reaching the summit is optional; returning to your car is not.

Groups For Hikers To Get Together

AMC would seem to me to be the obvious solution.

    Opinions on Franconia day hikes

Just a reminder for those familiar with the area (not suggesting it for the OP): the lower section of the Greenleaf Trail, which parallels the highway, is a drag and can be avoided by "bushwhacking" from/to the Old Man Viewing parking, the original route of the trail. Described it in Mount...

    Opinions on Franconia day hikes

Mt Liberty has basically the same views as Franconia Ridge, so I would choose Moosilauke for the other "big" hike, Again, for the "small" hike, Mt Pemi is very close to Franconia Notch (though it has very different views to the south) so Dickey-Welch might make sense.

Dealing with / avoiding altitude sickness (Utah)

10 and 12K are not very high for hiking (as opposed to sleeping). In 2002, when I was a 65 year old kid, I left Boston on a Saturday, slept in Silverthorne, CO at about 9K, and next day (Sunday) hiked Ptarmigan Mountain (12,498 feet). I took Monday off, and on Tuesday I hiked Quandry Peak...

    Mt. Whitney

Is a helmet required for the Mount Whitney Trail? Clearly wild overkill if that is the case, so do not worry about it. Acclimatization is a much more serious issue, see Hiking Mt. Whitney, California Highpoint, August 2002 for how our group did it.

    Mt. Whitney

Depends on how the poster plans to go up :) I assumed that she was interested in climbing rather than hiking ... climbing may need a guide though I agree that hiking up requires stamina but no special skills.

Q is for Quabbin Reservoir. Surely some of our Central Mass members have a photo of it?

Lots of free Garmin compatible maps at GPSFileDepot. Make sure to get the transparent My Trails map showing selected trails across the country.

    Presi "lite" saturday

Many many years ago there was a trip posted in the Outdoors similar to this, also labelled "Vice Presidential Range Traverse". Leaders described it as a hike for recovering peak addicts :)

Snoring and staying at an AMC hut advice?

My take is that it is hut goers responsibility to bring ear plugs. If you don't have ear plugs, don't complain.

    Mammut Packs. Any feedback?

They are a Swiss company, very much associated with high quality in Switzerland, but apparently much less well known here.

    Looking for WMNF Gift Suggestions

Exactly what I would have suggested, though I cannot find them on his web site. Also some of the posters he has are special, I have a very nicely framed (post-purchase) panorama of the Northern Presidentials. He also (as my ageing memory seems to recollect) has a great Tuckerman's Ravine with...
