It's a big stream ... I have explored the old start on snowshoes a couple of times and heard ominous cracking sounds on the ice leading to a hasty retreat.
Five hours makes me think of GMT (or UTC to be more modern :)) on video vs local time on photos. No idea what, if anything, is the significance of that factoid.
Date/time can be easily changed in photos with EXIF Date Changer; I am sure a corresponding utility exists for video.
I just remembered that we had this very same conversation two years ago: Moosilauke Carriage Road -- an underrated winter approach.
Snowmobilers change their favorite rides from year to year. There are years when lots of groups start at the beginning on Tripoli Road (lots of space to park at...
Just read a post by TJsName about a trip on Carriage Road, no mention of snowmobiles.
Did you see any?
Posting rather than sending you a PM so that we can all see your reply ;)
Looking out of the window it seemed that today's snow would be a bust. Going out I had a pleasant surprise: at least two inches of fluffy stuff on the ground, and more to come. No giant accumulation, but probably enough to cover most of the ice.
I think the handrails are stacked in the underpass, maybe to be reused when they rebuild the bridge. The current bridge looks to me, as to many others, very temporary.
At thw very start of the trail, after the first underpass of Rt. 3, before the short descent.
Of course, if you take the shortcut from the road to the trail just before the I 93 underpass you will miss it.
Not sure whether this has been reported, but the bridge at the start of the Mt Pemi trail has cracked, and a replacement bridge has been built a few feet away:
Tim is writing about the upper end of Tripoli Road.
The lower end is used by snowmobilers, so it is packed by them. Lots of unpacked snow on the sides of the road.
Hubbard Brook Road is used by the Forest Service snowmobiles, but has almost no other snowmobile traffic (no suitable parking)...
Unplowed roads should give you the easiest going.
Tripoli Road from off I-93 has a steepish start, then a flatter section. From Waterville Valley it climbs more steadily, though never steeply.
Another of my favorites is Hubbard Brook Road, a bit steeper (about 600 feet over first 1½ miles).
From the road status thread:
Let me reply in a new thread ...
The trail itself is excellent and as clear as any maintained trail.
The start, however, is not obvious if you do not know what you are looking for. Lord knows how many times I have gone up it, but I once missed its start and...
