    Tripoli Road Closure

Open and paved today, saw lots of cars parked on the road at the Osceola trailhead.

    Tripoli Road Closure

This is very interesting. The paved sections of Tripoli Road are a total mess. Last spring (2012), before opening the road, it was surveyed for "fixing". Nothing happened last year, I wonder if in their wisdom they plan to repave it in mid-summer.

    Carriage Road Trail up Moosilauke

I do it quite often, see Moosilauke Carriage Road -- an underrated winter approach. Easy grades, good footing, low traffic, what's not to like?

    Sunday storm ... power outages

Today there was a brief storm over Thornton, did not seem too serious. But my lights flickered (not enough to reset electric clocks). So out of curiosity I checked the NHEC outage map. To my surprise I found extensive outages in both Thornton (about ¼ of NHEC homes) and Waterville Valley...

WMNF GIS trails data - GPX

All the WMNF trails are found on the transparent Garmin My Trails-High Quality Trail and POI Maps Map: The maps have many gaps as they are based on whatever information their creator could find. I do not use this map myself as I have long ago made my own transparent map of the WMNF, and these...

    Tripod for hiker

From another thread: The price certainly seems right ... any other suggestions before I order it? From the specs: 52" is pretty low, and from what I have read fully extending the center column greatly decreases stability. A taller model: is obviously heavier. On the other hand, I will...

    Mt Madison, 6/9

And great waterfall photos! What tripod do you use on such a big hike, and what does it weigh? I love the concept of the Gorillapod, but in practice I rarely find a suitable attachment for it. No doubt ... Brookside plus Watson sure beats the Interstate known as Valley Way :)

Atwood Pond from Smart's Brook Trail

Today I wanted a short walk (60-90 minutes) in the woods, so I drove to the Smart's Brook trailhead planning to do the classic loop over the XC ski trails: Tritown -> Yellow Jacket -> Pine Flats. But: When I was about ¼ mile from the upper end on the Tritown Trail I noticed a well worn path...

How was the mileage in the White Mountain Guide originally determined

Best simple explanation is in the Wikipedia article Coastline Paradox: That article has a neat figure that shows the different coastlines using 100 km and 50 km "rulers".

    camera batteries for Europe travel

I suspect that many basic NiMH AA/AAA chargers are still US only ... that was definitely the case a few years ago when I bought my current charger. I know that the OP was not asking about NiMH batteries, but thought that a warning might be useful.

    Sunday storm ... power outages

Wow ... This afternoon I was watching the thunderstorm approach on the radar ... then it reached us :( There was a narrow band, so I expected it to pass us fairly soon. It did, but in the brief period it was over us there were very strong winds, and soon enough the power went out. I tried to...

    WMNF Forest Road Status

I drove up it end to end yesterday ... But yes, it may not be officially open. This morning I parked just below the lower gate (which was open) for a two hour walk, on my way back the gate was closed. During my walk I saw at least four WMNF trucks going up, so maybe something needed fixing...
