Does long-term hiking have to involve a list?

I'm not much into lists. but that's just me. Over course of year I see something on map and say to myself I haven't been up there in a long time look over my list and and add it to sheet I keep. A weekend comes and presents certain weather and personal time constraints. I might look at the...

Strava heat map - Acteon Ridge bootleg trail?

I've been up Sachem many times. One time from the north side. I'm not aware of any bootleg trails from north side. The area is heavily visited by mountain bikers and rock climbers and there are many unofficial trails used by mountain bikers and rock climbers. Having said that - I haven't...

Mt Oscar - Great entry level bushwhack

PB ....... Thanks for joining me. Great TR! This was a nice little outing. It's always more fun to have someone with you to debate route finding options.

    drones

Drones could be much use to bushwhackers. Recently we were debating whether to turn around or continue the 800' to get to this off trail view ledge when my companion jokingly suggested we dispatch a drone to scout ahead for terrain conditions. Drones could revolutionize peak bagging...

The week after Labor Day week

For those of us confined to being weekend warriors I've long treasured the weekends before and after the major holidays as times to come up to the mountains. Its sort of like the low ebb tide before the storm surge to borrow metaphor currently in use by weather forecasters for Hurricane Irma...

    Hedgehog Chasm found

Ascending Hogback and Fisher from Haselton Brook has been on my to-do list for this year so your posting inspired me to try visiting the chasm. I got up to 2200' when it appeared to me that the chasm might have a lot of little brother and sister crevasses. Terrain was steep and best routes for...

    Hedgehog Chasm found

Frank Oliver Carpenter in his Guide Book to the Franconia Notch and the Pemigewasset Valley describes Walker Ice Cave which from description is 3 miles up Haselton Brook from Elkins Farm which is at base of Fisher. That's where I formed idea it was further up valley. Two other acquaintances who...

    Hedgehog Chasm found

Topo lines are rounded as you approach 2400' and appear to sharpen above 2400 so chasm is below point where ridge begins to sharpen. Did you go all way up to high point? Open ledges on top of twin peaks of Hogback are very fine. I recall from our traverse from Fisher to Green woods in col...

    Hedgehog Chasm found

Good job finding the chasm. I've heard tales about this chasm too. I always had impression it was way further up in the valley towards Tecumseh. I know this area pretty well as I've made number of excursions into it. Its been on my list for this year to ascend Fisher and Hogback from this...

    Wet & Slippery

Couple years back I met up with some bushwhackers and we were hiking in wet steep slippery terrain around Cone Mountain. I was having hard time keeping up due to poor traction and they were praising the FiveTen boots they were wearing as being super grippy in all conditions. FiveTen appears to...

Resolution Shelter/Speckled summit area - water sources?

While Forest Svc is fond of removing things - they would have hard time removing water source at former Resolution shelter. Water source is not constructed thing, but is rocky drainage from the col located not far from where shelter used to be. rocks are rearranged to form pools in various...

Old trail near Algonquin Trail, Sandwich, N.H.

I know this area pretty well. I like to do a loop via Algonquin to top of Black MT and drop down to Black Mt Pond and return via the old roads. I say roads plural because there are 2 of them. I first became interested in them because Nat Geo Topo edition of USGS maps showed this old road...

    Android Hiking App

I use Gaia GPS. Works on both iphone and android phones. Was recommended to me by couple of different folks one of whom is quite sharp at GPS. This thread is eye-opener for me. I had no idea there were so many other apps out there for Android. Sometimes the UI can be quite perplexing. I...

    Mt. Moosilauke

Sierra mentions the TH parking lot requires payment of WMNF use fee. TH kiosk will have envelope to fill out with your plate number etc. Bring some cash to put in envelope. I don't know how much it costs because I used to pruchase a sticker but now qualify for federal Golden Age Pass. If...

    Mt. Moosilauke

I can see from your Avatar you are Catskill grid person so I won't trouble you with questions of fitness. Do you have a date in mind? It pays to be mindful of certain weekends. This coming weekend for example is last weekend of Laconia Bike Week. Traffic on I93 can become snarled when large...

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

Long time ago I ordered new sunglasses with polarizing. I recall now how display on my Cateye bike computer used to used to have all these rainbow colors. I thought something was wrong with the unit until I figured out it was the polarizing in the sunglasses causing it. used to do odd things...

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

I'm pretty sure the sunglasses aren't polarized. They are prescription - not off the rack. You think the screen might be polarized? Good suggestion though. I'll check it out this weekend.

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

I checked Display brightness. It is set at 100%. Removing my sunglasses might be the answer. They are fairly dark. What with recent run of clouds & rain bright sunlight is exceptional situation. One other good feature is unit holds charge pretty long even when left on during a day hike...

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

I've been using the Delorme Inreach SE for 6 months now. I prefer it to the Spot Gen 3 used previously. It does have some problems though. The screen looks totally blank in bright sunlight. On several occasions on bushwhacks in remote areas I pressed the button to activate while stopped on...
