    Mount Osceola Southwest Slide 7/21/2020

We’ve been doing variety of online research and preliminary explorations with view to making an excursion into ravine below southwest spur ridge of Mount Osceola to visit the V-shaped slide shown below in this photo taken from Waterville Valley. We succeeded in scheduling a day with good weather...

    The Info on Mt. Cabot

Update on Mount Cabot Trail closure Recently (July 4, 2020) I wondered whatever happened to Mount Cabot Trail closure so I sent a message to WMNF via web page contact link to inquire. I received the following response message from Marianne Leberman (WMNF). Not much has changed I guess. Thanks...

    Kayak Car Roof Rack Question

I thought I would add photos of our Thule rack installation on 2018 Subaru Crosstrek as it might help others in selecting crossbars. See photo below of 60" (153 cm) Thule Aero bar. Note the mounting bracket for mounting the Hullivator is mounted on the Aero bar and stays there all the time...

Cockermouth Forest Groton & Hebron NH - What are these artifacts???

Adding word "Antique" to "wood stove heat reclaim" yields an even better hit. Check this out! This is a coal stove. Coal is fed via middle door and ash hopper is lower compartment. The mixer photo may actually be some sort of ash dump device.

Cockermouth Forest Groton & Hebron NH - What are these artifacts???

Last spring I hiked Mount Crosby and Bald Knob in SPNHF Cockermouth Forest. These two peaks offer very fine views and the rocks and forest around the summits are quite nice too. One thing I really enjoy is coming across rusty artifacts. The lower elevations feature some very peculiar...

    Kayak Car Roof Rack Question

My wife likes to kayak and has 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. We got it with factory roof rails, but not factory cross bars. We opted for Thule Wingbars as I used to have Thule Square cross bars and I found they hummed loudly at highway speeds. Wingbars are super quiet in comparison. We also...

The Moose are out and active

I was wondering whether or not to post shot of the backhoe end. You would cause quite a stir if you were to show up with the SEE at your local antique car meetup.

The Moose are out and active

HA!!! Good opportunity to test out photo insertion features of new software. Which one were you driving? This one? Or this one? You should seek help for you have too many vehicles. :D

    Old school VFTT

What a good idea! My favorite cartoon by Timmus. I hope she and her family are doing well and most of all continues to do her artwork.

Hiker rescue on Mt Washington (was Scary.)

In keeping with practicing caution in hiking excursions I opted to hike my local favorite Plymouth Mountain which is generally low risk outing, yet provides interesting terrain. As trail involves north facing slope I encountered generous snow cover. I knew I'd need traction so I carried...

    Smarts Mt

Hi Scuba ... thanks for writing. The trail I took from summit taking off to the right heading north on AT from tower fits your description. In 2014 the only sign it had was one shown below "This is not the AT". I think it is the one you are talking about. My GPS track indicates it follows...

    Smarts Mt

Is this the Mascoma Trail that Scuba is writing about??? I hiked Smarts Mountain once from Green Woodlands via bushwhack from Green Woodlands in 2014. Near summit I came across a decent woodland road that was going my way and so I took it and followed it to junction with main trails. I...

    West Sleeper Slide 1/29/2020

Hiking and bush whacking with Mountain Wanderer Steve has been on my bucket list for long time. This snow shoe excursion to 9 year old slide that came down in 2011 during Tropical Storm Irene on spur ridge of West Sleeper was excellent combination of off trail and on trail navigation. We proved...

Need a rigid sole boot for.....

I purchased a winter boot by Mammut Magic High GORE-TEX which appears to be similar to the Makalu and Lowa mentioned above. I've been very happy with it. Mammut rates it in tech specs for -20C. https://www.mammut.com/us/en/p/3010-00760-3226/magic-high-gtx-men/

Skiing this weekend in the Pemi

My man who keeps our driveway clear in Plymouth reports 10" wet heavy snow fell as Thursday AM. He says 6-8" is expected in Plymouth Saturday. I expect further north or further up elevation the lower will be water content. I expect Saturday dump will be less water content as cold air has...

    "The Sharp End of Life"

This reminds me of a conversation I had with my son this afternoon. I was attempting to describe to him difference between "lead" climbing and what I did once upon a time when I was experimenting with climbing in Sierra Nevada. I had learned some climbing basics and tagged along with two guys...
