Retirement Celebration Baxter State Park 9/16 to 9/20

I retired from my job on 9/13. My trip to Baxter 9/16 to 9/20 was excellent way to celebrate! I don't normally post long TR, but figure long TR's on Baxter are of interest to many members for insight into working of the park. By coincidence I went to my nieces wedding down in Providence RI in...

Mullen Mountain - Baxter State Park

We were just up on Fort summit last week and this rocky summit jumped out at me. I was pretty sure it was Mullen although right nearby map shows summit called Bald Mountain. I was wondering if people visited it. Now I know.

Caribou Valley Rd near Carrabassett Valley, ME

I just searched NE Trail Conditions for Redington. There are numerous reports for Crockers Redington for this summer 2019. One in particular reports "Weyerhaeuser is closing the Caribou Pond Road Monday through Friday from July 15 until December 31 from 4:00 AM to 6:00 PM for forestry...

Backpacker Magazine article on JR Stockwell - NH hiker extraordinaire

He shows up in Steve Smith's blog from time to time like a time when they teamed up to bushwhack entire length of Carr Mountain which is a good read. I had a close encounter with JR once when I bushwhacked to Greens Cliff off the Kanc. I was signing into the bottle register and found he'd been...

Things To Do Heading Home From Baxter To CT

Portland or Portsmouth are nice places to stop for visits. Both offer plenty of eating and drinking options and walking opportunities. I see the Press Room in Portsmouth has re-opened.

    Tunnel Brook/Benton Trail Road Access

This so embarrassing. I have to confess I goofed!!!!!!!!!! :eek:The photo of the pool is not on FR 170. It is the pool just above bridge at present trail head. Further review of my photo set revealed the bridge railing didn't match the railing of bridge in photo of the FR 170 bridge, but it...

    Tunnel Brook/Benton Trail Road Access

Bridge and pool is on FR 170. I hiked in on Tunnel Brook Trail, but opted to hike out on the road just to see where it went. The road makes long overshoot past trail head so I opted to bushwhack 200' drop to the road down below to save 3/4 mile extra walking. If FS was to make this a trail...

    Tunnel Brook/Benton Trail Road Access

The road is very well engineered for long term usage. See this bridge crossing at Little Tunnel Brook. Note the attention paid to drainage etc Best part about returning via this road is the nice swim hole in Tunnel Brook where one can cool off after after a long day on the Moose. I like...

    Recommendations for MDI car camping?

I recall a place not far from Blackwoods that has coin-operated showers. I'm sure it must still be there. If you bring a bike and are in shape for it you can ride up top of Cadillac really early in morning to miss the traffic. The ride down is real hoot. Very well banked road.

Guyot Shelter will be closed September 1st-18th

Salty! Historical Aerials - What an interesting web site! 1939 maps in particular show how massively the area was logged. The extent of network of skidder trails is mind boggling. Washburn's oblique aerial photos of Hancock in various books shows skidder trails really well. I always...

Tripoli Road Camping closed Indefinitely due to Bear issues

Update on Tripoli Road.... I drove up Tripoli Road Sunday 7/28 intending to do bushwhack up West Tecumseh spur ridge from Hix Hill Road. I was shocked and saddened to see conditions on Tripoli Road. I saw plenty of camping going on all along the road. The gate to Forest Road I wanted to use...

Twin Brook Trail -Quite a Surprise

Redlining sure calls for some creative routes of which this is one. I seem to recall similar experience about trail from 13 Falls to Frost Trail and hut. I think the choice of route for relocation Gale River Trail was unfortunate. Hard to see in advance nice flat route in non-mineral forest...

    Garmin GPSMAP 66i is here

Being registered Garmin user I got an email notification about the newest GPSMAP 66i is being released. It appears to do what I've always wanted Garmin to do - combine Inreach tech with Garmin 64 tech in one package. I've always had impression the Inreach Explorer has GPS navigation, but it...

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

Lost Dad I agree 100% with your observations on Industrial Wind Power impacts versus long distance power export from HQ. When PB started this thread and someone posted link to satellite imagery it was obvious proposed route is through industrial forest land. Visual impact due to industrial...

Ever heard what Lynx sounds like ?

I've heard something like that before 40+ years ago when I lived in Napa Valley of CA. A buddy and I had buddy hiked up to a high point near basalt lava flow cliffs overlooking Calistoga CA. We cooked our meals, got a buzz on, enjoyed the city lights of the valley down below, and bedded down...

4 days in Acadia National Park with kids - Recommendations

Blackwoods Campground is awesome place. I've used it as base camp couple of times. It is short walk to some sea cliffs with great views. I recall being out on cliffs on full moon and being awestruck by the reflection of the moon on the ocean waves. Pre-marriage and pre-kids we did on hike...
