Cog claims you need to pay to cross the tracks

I've read and re-read Cog web page and fail to see any reason for all this hot air. Cog is just offering a service not unlike what AMC is doing on east side of mountain at Pinkham Notch. A well plowed large parking lot for outdoor recreation activities with opportunity to get hot drinks and...

Backpacking Half Dome in Yosemite National Park

Inspired by Sable's Half Dome report I did Google search for slide scanning services and came up with new business called EverPresent sounded very much like just the ticket for slide scanning. They started in Boston area and have grown quickly and now have franchises all over. I threw together...

    Piermont Mountain 14 October 2018

I visited 2717’ Piermont summit previous June for the first time from Camp Walt Whitman. The camp was just opening and many camp staff were busy readying the facility for the summer season. I stopped and approached a work party preparing the clay tennis courts. A young woman offered to show...

    RIP Paradox :(

I forget when I met John. We were working NEHH at same time so we teamed up to tag some of the HH peaks in Maine. I recall one weekend visiting the Crockers and Reddington one rainy day and visiting E Kennebago the next day together. Here is silly selfie of two knuckleheads looking very damp...

Backpacking Half Dome in Yosemite National Park

I just noticed your response. In re-reading my post and noticed I said west of summit when I should have said east of summit. We were coming from east. Not unusual dyslexic error especially after so many years. I was just going from memory you see. Being from Needham I noticed you visited...

Backpacking Half Dome in Yosemite National Park

Thanks for inspiring some fond memories of trip to Yosemite back in 1976 (Bicentennial Year) where we camped out on top of 10K' Clouds Rest for two nights. We had set up our tent down in the park like forest west of summit and went up summit to see the sunset when we found a group from Bay Area...

    Franconia Struggles

I heartily agree we are all petroleum based life forms - some more than others though. I miss the space my old SUV had, but love love love my new ride that gets 32.5 mpg. I'm contributing to thread drift and bad feelings so will say no more on this topic.

    Eagle Cliff Traverse

Great report as usual PB. I unwisely decided to do this traverse on Sunday. The hardwood forest on north slope was not as friendly as I imagined. The approach terrain above Lafayette Brook proved to be steep and rough with deep hobble bush and blow downs. I only made it to the pair of bumps...

Eastman Brook Bread Tray Ridge 7/15/2018

I hiked up Osceola via Tripoli road on 7/30/18. I intended to see if I could pick up the telephone wire by whacking short distance to left off trail in shallow 3500' col between Bread Tray Spur Ridge and main mountain. The terrain proved to be extremely uninviting. it was sort of mature...

Eastman Brook Bread Tray Ridge 7/15/2018

I've had it on my to-do list to explore headwaters of Eastman Brook with a view to locating old Bread Tray Ridge Trail. today was my first exploration of the area. I headed up East Pond Trail and banged right towards the Tripoli Mill site. I observed an attractive looking logging road, but...

    Mittersill

I agree with R21 suggestion to improve Mittersill trail as it would help disperse usage off Lafayette ridge and utilizes existing under-utilized parking. I've hiked ski trails before and been impressed with how good erosion control can be on such steep terrain. Ski trails offer great views...

Rocky Branch Trail From Jericho Road

I recall Steve Smith posted fairly recent and detailed report on his Mountain Wandering Blog describing excursion he took back in June 2016 after WMNF did trail repairs after Irene Storm. I hope this link works for you. The bridge looks pretty good in satellite map layer on Caltopo...

    Bushwhacked Mt Kancamagus

Glad to hear you made it. Sorry could not join you. Odd coincidence HMJ on NE Trails Conditions visited Kanc on same day started from Graham Outlook on Kanc. I recall visiting Greens Cliff another relatively rarely visited objective and finding JR Stockwell signed in couple of hours before I...

    Leki Trekking Poles

I haven't tried the Leki poles with flick lock. I've had nothing but good luck with Black Diamond flick locks. Flick locks work well in winter with gloves on. I wish they would make wrist straps longer as straps aren't long enough to accommodate heavy mittens or gloves when it get's really...

    Leki Trekking Poles

Did you try adjusting the screw on the flick lock clamp? Turn clockwise to increase clamping force. If you turn it too far clockwise it won't close or will take too much force to close the flick lock. play with until you achieve the right amount of clamp force.

Sabbaday Falls Trail and Parking Lot - Closed

I drove by Sabbaday Falls parking lot on 5/21/2018 at around 9:00 AM. I recall noticing a large number of contractor pickup trucks and personnel milling around on roadside and in parking lot. Barriers were still up. It was a Monday. They might not be working on weekends so if you drive by on...

Laconia Bike Week 2018 Reminder Saturday June 9 - Sunday June 17

Error was due to Googling Laconia Bike Week and due to lack of attention selecting the one for 2019 rather than 2018. I fixed the body text, but was unable to correct the subject line. Close enough I guess.

    Franconia Notch parking survey

One solution would be for state of NH (in cooperation with WMNF, AMC) to provide regular and reliable shuttle bus service between parking lots at Skookumchuk, Flume, Cannon and/or Lincoln Woods. Something which one could reliably expect shuttle bus to come by at least every 15-20 minutes...
