    Best hikes in the Berkshires

My kids are in mid 20's. When it is your 5 year they are your treasure. The treasure part has worn off having passed through high school and teen age years. 5 year old kids best remember a brook where they can stop to play in the water. Hiking in humid weather means salamanders. Kids love...

White Mountain National Forest Road Status (Tripoli Road???)

Slippery Brook Road Conditions Golly .... It's been long time since I posted images. It was struggle trying to figure how to do this. I biked Slippery Brook road back in 2014 when it was gated due to this washout shown in photo below taken in 2014. Note the lack of rip-rap. I passed by...

Hiking under the influence (of electronics)

I'll say one thing for solo bushwhacking. I did a solo bushwhack to Mount Chandler an area teeming with wild life in spite of (or perhaps due to) past logging activity. Hiking solo there is no loud conversations to cause critters to head for cover well in advance of your passage. I saw cow...

    Road status - northern N.H.

Yahoo!!!!!!!! Bear Notch Road is open!!!! so says Trails NH. Good time to take a day off from daily drudge for a visit to Sable and Chandler before the ferns and hobble bush leaf out on Monday. Water crossings on Slippery Brook should be interesting on Monday. Bear Notch Road is a nice road...

Hiking under the influence (of electronics)

I listen to music sometimes when I'm hiking especially if I have long steep climb takes my mind off the tedium of long steep climb. A nice beat sometimes makes me go faster than I might with out it. As my trail name implies I tend towards the cerebral type music so I still have my hearing...

Crawford Path getting major attention this summer

That's great to hear. CP gets tons of traffic and would certainly benefit from trail hardening done right. I haven't been on Crawford Path in long time, but one thing always impressed me when hiking it was huge volumes of sand stored in delta deposits built up over the many decades deposited...

White Mountain National Forest Road Status (Tripoli Road???)

Krobi sent me a PM informing me WMNF scheduled trail maintenance training day on East Pond Trail for May 19 so it is pretty safe bet Tripoli Road will be open by then. Tripoli Road usually opens earlier than most FS roads. I think Rolling Rock can rest easy. Say Rolling Rock is good name for...

White Mountain National Forest Road Status (Tripoli Road???)

So appears WMNF has removed the web page about WMNF Road Status. I don't know how much of the WMNF annual budget it took to maintain this useful resource, but it appears to be gone. That used to be a fairly useful resource come transition between seasons like now. Now they just say roads may...

    Flat Mountain Pond Trail

Grades were designed for logging RR. Hairpin turn was to provide steady rail road grade to height of land at the pond. At major brook crossings there was log built trestles. If you look closely you will notice embedded log footings still in place preserved by being kept wet. You will...

    Mt Equinox in Vermont

Good one Joe! I mixed the dogs name up with Cuba whom Mount Cube is supposedly named after. Joe must have an amazing organized photo filing system.

    Is Bushwhacking for you ??

I find it nice to have 2 or 3 in group. The leader can then concentrate on finding clear route to follow and persons in back can watch the compass or map or GPS and say Hey you're off course. You need to work right or left. You can make better time that way. It is nice to have someone to...

    Is Bushwhacking for you ??

Like PB says maybe 5-10% hikers have bug for bushwhacking and it appears to me majority of the 5-10% bushwhackers focus on lists like NH100 etc. Lists are fine for some, but not for me. I'm generally interested in ledge outcrops with good views not necessarily a list peak. I have some special...

    NE100 in winter ???

You are correct Joe. I've been to Dorset from south and north sides. Although not in winter I expect South approach is something of residential road and plowed. Approach from north side is also nice way to go and also plowed. I think south probably had some sort of turnaround or TH for plow...

    Thursday Snowshoe up Gap Mountain?

Gap Mountain sounds like a real gem! Thanks for pointing it out. Summit is just high and open enough to give grand view of Grand Monadnock. Unfortunately I have to work. As for 52 one thing I've learned is one could easily come up with 200 or 300 peaks with views in NH alone if you eliminate...

    Improving Hike Safe Card

Yikes! Thanks for posting. I didn't get any email reminder either and so am hiking "cardless" too. I think they work same way as fishing license which I think are good for the calendar year.

Big difference in snow totals from last weeks storm

0445 hours and Snow is measuring 18" now in Waltham MA, still pretty high water content. Our house is relatively sheltered have had wind, but not so much. Certainly won't qualify as blizzard, but large volumes of snow for sure. and Snow continues to fall steadily.

Big difference in snow totals from last weeks storm

Tuesday 3/13 11:30 The next storm has been going since last night down here in eastern MA. Another damp dense snow sticks to every thing trees signs and/or your shovel. I just came in from rescuing our Rododendrons and lilac bushes from certain structural failure. I'll have to go out 2-3 more...
