March 8, 2018 Coastal Storm Data

Fuzzy has it right Winter is too short. When I was up last weekend it looked like sap was starting to run weather sub freezing at night and above freezing during day. Down in eastern MA our daffodils were coming up .... good thing I banked them with mulch. Drive to work out on 495 proved to...

March 8, 2018 Coastal Storm Data

Waltham MA It rained most of the day yesterday here. It started snowing last night here about 9 and been snowing all night only 4-5 inches of wet heavy snow this morning. Evergreen shrubs in back yard are bending over under the weight. Predicted high winds haven't really materialized as of...

Coos County to Discuss the Cog "road" and the regs pertaining to the Cog Hotel

ATV/Snocat road for occasional maintenance doesn't necessarily equate to safe route for regular trips offered to the general public. This requires much higher level and expectation of safety. Auto-road has huge zig-zags to accomplish gentle grades and alternate winter routes established long...

    Tripoli Road in wnter

Doing this loop is long day. Stinkyfeet did such a loop of Tecumseh some years bck whose report inspired me to try doing the Tecumseh loop. She did it CCW and I did it CW. Both of us employed BW from trail to T Road. It is doable if you're comfortable traveling off trail and snow conditions...

    Quick Run up Tecumseh

Hi PB ... Glad to hear you're getting out. I managed to avoid the flu so far this winter even though my wife is just coming off a bad bout with it. Due to frigid temps and snow and ice management chores I've been confining myself to steady diet of small mountains. I took a vacation day to...

    Compass Recommendation

I use my compass all the time. My compass is pretty low tech. I look for high visibility text and well marked north shed for visibility in low light. If I was in market for new compass I would probably pick Silva Explorer Pro High Visibility Compass. You can google this and probably find it...

    L.L. Bean Guarantee

My wife did spell working the register for LL Bean. She told me about obnoxious individuals who returned some totally beat garment and having to give them credit for it. Even with new policy register clerks and telephone service still have ability to look up customer's sales history and see...

    Neil Luckhurst Project 100

I regret getting off on fund raising sidetrack . The "discussion of the activity" and his high quality web site is principle intention of this thread. I found blog post account of the assistance given to injured hiker on Giant an excellent and informative read. Brilliant discussion of how to...

    Neil Luckhurst Project 100

Thanks to Steve Smith for his recent posting on his Mountain Wandering blog about Neil Luckhurst fund raising Project 100. I can't believe it hasn't found its way on to VFTT. Perhaps due to VFTT policy against using site for fund raising??? To quote Steve With a little help from his...

Hale Fire Road Access - Little River Road Winter Access Twins and Hale

Thank you RR for link to your trip report to Hale. Signs are helpful, but hikers are not mind readers. Someone should make a one or two laminated weather proof sign mounted to 10 X 12 piece of plywood to hang below trail sign or other strategic spots stating. Perhaps Tim could pass the hat to...

    Winter (slack pack?) up wildcat

I think cell coverage should be ok at upper elevations. Should have reasonable shot on towers in N Conway or Gorham. Lower elevations could be shaky. Descent goes pretty quick so don't wait until you get to lower elevations to make your call especially if you bring skis.

    White Mountain Characters ~

Al was active in NH Chapter Excursions committee. I received email today from Excursions committee chairs informing members his death was unexpected and "Apparently he had just gone hiking to Owls Head, came home, and passed away in his sleep." I hiked with Al a couple of times. He was on one...

    Looks like spring up north

I hiked Red Hill via Eagle Cliff on Squam Lake. Ice conditions were awesome!!! Not figure skating quality ice, but nice ice surface had formed. On way over I saw a group wearing hockey skates out playing around on Little Squam. Views of Squam from Eagle Cliff were fine with shiny surface...

    Looks like spring up north

Thanks for interesting and detailed report on significant change in conditions. I need to come up to Plymouth to check on our trailer home to see how it made out after the deep freeze. I was concerned about having to drive in sleet conditions but forecast has morphed to safe conditions after...

Hale Fire Road Access - Little River Road Winter Access Twins and Hale

I surmise NH48 Winter List peak bagging have been steadily increasing over past 10 years or so. Perhaps some data mining number cruncher type can confirm this by analyzing statistics of 4K committee. Steadily increasing traffic and parking on LR River Road related to this is no doubt...

Hale Fire Road Access - Little River Road Winter Access Twins and Hale

One long term resolution might be for FS to contact landowners regarding purchase some sort of easement for winter trail head parking lot. The FS in response abutting Little River Road landowner complaints FS decided to close certain snomo trails and convert some existing abandoned logging road...

Ice Storm of 1998 , twenty year anniversary

You may have a point there. I distinctly recall going to Windblown and massive ice storm damage and major power outages lasting long time, but 1998 didn't quite make sense to me. but 2009? I'll have to check my records such as they are. I checked Wikipedia and there was ice storm was in Dec 11...

Ice Storm of 1998 , twenty year anniversary

I remember the ice storm. I recall reading about massive damage to XC ski trails at Windblown ski Area in New Ipswich in southern NH. It occurred to me to drive out there from Waltham with a bow saw thinking to help begin clearing trails. I recall seeing fleets of bucket trucks in convenience...

    $10 Parking At Cog Station

I agree 100%. maintaining parking lot at 2500' elevation in snow season is not cheap.
