Whats up in the North Country

Tomato farm sounds promising. I've seen tomatoes on the shelf in Roche Brothers in eastern MA produce department must come from similar operation in Vermont. They aim to compete in quality. Price is competitive. People like to eat salad with tomatoes all year round and winter tomatoes are awful.

    Owl's Head 5/20

I'll add my 2 cents here. Years ago when we did OH first time we did BP BW on way in, but opted for the Fisherman BW on way out on account it was getting dark and none of us was particularly confident in our off-trail navigation. Darkness comes early down in Lincoln Brook valley what with the...

The Mohawk Loop, 14-16 Apr. 2017

It was nice to be reminded of Cathedral Pines. Cathedral Pines used to be truly unique old forest grove of massive white pines. I heard the trees were wiped out by large wind event of some kind - micro-burst or tornado or something like that. I was fortunate to had the pleasure of visiting...

    Banner Year For Ticks??

I think number of ticks is partly related to natural environments one travels through. Last summer I took wife and son on nice easy hike up to scenic knob in Ashland NH called Whitten Woods. I thought they would love it as trails are maintained mostly grassy with very easy footing. On way...

    Blowdowns

I heard of a group who hiked Shelbourne Moriah one time. They accessed trail via forest service road. It was very windy day. After summiting and driving in the car on their way out they encountered a tree had blown down across the forest service road they had come in on. Fortunately a forest...

Moosilauke Ravine Lodge replacement - project approved

On 4/9/2017 I went up Moosilauke via Gorge Brook Trail and took this snap shot progress photo of the lodge. I haven't seen the lodge in long time, but it seems very reminiscent of the old building. Looking good!!!

    Sandwich Dome

Trail leading up to Noone Peak is ultra steep. wet slippery snow could make this trail dicey. Recommend ascending via Smarts Brook. Not as much traffic on this route and may not be broken out though. Few winters ago I took this route and it wasn't broken out. Although someone did eventually...

    Waterville Valley Real Estate

Good questions to ask might be to ask about water infrastructure of the condo. We own a mobile home in a cooperatively owned mobile home park in Plymouth similar to a condo. We aren't able to come up as often as we would like and aren't able to attend association meetings. The park has...

FYI: Northern Pass High Voltage Transmission Project

George Sansoucy Pre-file testimony to SEC discusses this under-utilized other corridor of which Eversource is 33% part owner. I highly recommend reading his testimony. It is clear and well written. Maybe this testimony is what woke up National Grid and HQ to this far better alternative to...

    Hips

I encountered a number of happy couples. You may have been one of them. My GPS track shows I arrived at summit 1:45 and departed summit 2:20. I stopped at one of Clay spurs to chill for another 30-45 mins because it offers nice view of summit and head wall of Great Gulf. I didn't start back...

    Hips

Update on my recovery. I put W48 list on far back burner due to hip problems. I haven't been doing any big mountain hikes this winter much exceeding 2000' elevation gain, but I have been getting out steadily. I'd mostly written off bagging the Presidential peaks I have left to do, but I...

    Jewell Spur

Interesting coincidence. I just hiked the jewel trail yesterday and noticed a rope nearly buried in snow stretched across what appeared to be trail in the location your map describes. It looked like it had not been used for some time. No tracks buried or otherwise. I did see many back...

Bigelow Hollow State Park In CT

I spent many good years in halls of academia at UConn in Storrs. Another winter activity we did was cross-country skiing when only option was wax and wooden skis. Blizzard of 78 was good way to get into cross-country skiing. But I'm showing my age. Two of my subjects was floristics of...

Bigelow Hollow State Park In CT

I think it is safe bet that it gets plowed. Besides snow mobiling, the ponds are good for ice fishing if the ice is good. Many years ago we hiked out to Breakneck Pond to go ice skating. Main park roads were plowed. Breakneck Pond is like a piece of Maine in CT.

    Mt. Cube Ski Touring Center

I love Mount Cube! Mount Cube Farm is still a going concern and taps maple trees on slopes of Mount Cube. They are open weekends when the sap is running and offer free sample mini-pancakes with some syrup in a cup. They have a very handsome sap boiler and you can go in back to watch it work...

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

So my prediction came true already. Too bad I just purchased my Inreach. Maybe that explains the deep discount I got. Oh well. I'll probably fork out the money for the new Garmin as it really would be something to only carry one device. The directional keypad on the new unit looks like the...

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

Hey Trail Boss ... Thanks for the tip! That really is easy. That solves one problem. I also found I needed to add some contacts to the pre-set message set-up. I just now tested it out on the back deck and the message is transmitted and received in seconds. I heard the little tweet right...

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

Disappointing results from yesterday's field trials on Inreach. I snowshoed Tecumseh and tested out Inreach in mild winter conditions. I attempted to send pre-set message from the summit. The directional keypad proved to be even more difficult to use necessitating removing my light-weight...

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

I've been using Spot Gen 3 for 2-3 years for reasons many hikers use it. Similar to Beth Z I try to avoid hiking in risky weather, but I have a passion for off-trail navigation. Due to hectic work and family life I have hard time juggling schedules with collaborators so I'm going solo most of...

This forecast brought to you by the Snow Sports Industry 12 to 18" ;)

Thanks for posting. Stuff like this is what makes VFTT great! For what its worth. It rained mostly down here. We have 1-1.5" of frozen formerly damp snow here in Waltham MA. Clear and sunny day will soften it up as day goes on.
