Bonticou Crag - How was it formed?

Just from looking at the map... and the proximity to the "gunks". I'd say a combination of glaciation and erosion. The Catskills and southern NY mountains were formed by the erosion of shale and other "soft" rocks while leaving the ridge and ranges of the Cats intact. From the Wikipedia page...

RT 2 Trailhead Parking for North Presis

Parking on the road east of Appalachia can save you a huge .1 miles of flat walking if you're taking Fallsway (which we all know is a bajillion times better than Valley Way xD) since you can see it from the road, you can walk right into the woods and pick up the trail there! Just kidding, not...

    Cloudland Falls and Beyond

I'd like to take credit for clearing the falls, but I'm pretty sure it was Irene. :) Shining Rock isn't quite as scary as it looks in that picture. The ledge you see is probably 2 feet wide and you can walk out to the end of it (the exposure is maybe 10-15 feet). The view is real nice over to...

    Cloudland Falls and Beyond

Great pictures Tim! I especially like the last one. It almost looks like it could be the Great Wall running along the ridge. :) Did you notice any blowdowns or other trail work that might need done on FWT?

more New England mountain lion rumors

It sounds like F&G thinks there are an awful lot of wild Golden Retrievers around new England.

6/24 rescue, from Baxter Park's perspective

What the heck I had the torches lit and the pitchforks ready and everything.

What Ever Happened to the Bearcamp River Trail?

I have figured this out I think. Here's a link to the Committee minutes page: http://town.sandwich.nh.us/conservation/minutes/ In the 2011 minutes: From October 11, 2011 July 27, 2011 Looks like there was a closure of part of the trail and a decision was made to remove it from the...

    Hikes in Crawford Notch?

I second both of these. Crawford is short and steep but very nice. The summit area is fun to explore. We took our kids "Around the Lake" and to the Red Bench a few weeks ago and spent a nice afternoon checking out toads, bullfrogs, ducks, snakes, moose tracks, etc. We didn't see a single other...

    Table Rock - OMG!

This looks awesome! Thanks for the TR and pictures. I don't recall ever seeing a report from Table Rock either.

Pemi River Crossings With a Bum Knee

Hi Becca, I can relate. I took 4 months off this year to heal a bum knee. It's no fun! At least you're able to do some "flatlanding" to make up for it!

New F&G Brainstorm - Charge EVERYBODY.

Hahaha, right? I'm pretty sure F&G would be paying me if that was the case.

    What camera do you use?

Disclaimer: I am pretty new to photography. I'm currently using a Canon Rebel T3 with the default 18-55 IS II lens for "serious" pictures, and I love it. It's small enough to wear in a case attached to my chest strap for easy access without getting in the way too much. The only complaint I have...

Congratulations! I agree that it's been fun following along. :)

Phenomenal Alex Honnold - an amazing free soloing accomplishment

Not to simply play Devil's Advocate, but one could also argue that if he's not free soloing then he might as well be dead to the world anyway, he'd probably be dead to himself. What is Alex Honnold if not a free-soloist? (That's a rhetorical question by the way) Kudos to him. He's truly amazing.

New F&G Brainstorm - Charge EVERYBODY.

Looks like it's time to pick up my "migratory waterfowl" license to avoid being charged for walking in the woods!

    Nikon CoolPix

I had an older model of the coolpix (4 series circa 2005-6). It was a horrible piece of equipment. Honestly, the worst camera I've ever owned (worse than my phone). It was a "only take pictures in perfect lighting situations" kind of camera with no manual mode. It was a huge disappointment. I'm...

Three days in the Northern Presidentials (Part 1)

Nice TR! Jefferson's Knees look rather sharp from that angle! I haven't spent much time down in the Great Gulf, I think I need to plan on getting there more often. Great pictures.

Acadia Memorial Weekend Bash - 5-25 to 5-28-12

And yet, people make the 6+ hour, 265+ mile trip to viewless peaks on the border of Canada for list bagging. :) I guess everyone has their own idea of what's "worth" the trip. mtruman: We visited Asticou Terraces (but not the gardens) and there is some amazing rock work there. That was a great...
