    I am a 'DAKS virgin

    Broken Trails in Winter

Badge of honor To me, breaking trail is a rite of passage. Not that I am scouting the TRs looking for peaks that are not broken out mind you but there is something satisfying about trail breaking. Sometimes knowing that an unbroken trail awaits me can help summons the resolve that is required...

    I am a 'DAKS virgin

..also Pamola, perhaps there will be an opportunity to...um...and I must say this tactfully...maybe there will be opportunity to...uh...break the seal on 'Daks this summer? Seems we both, as well as a couple of my companieros, have an interest in filling in the blank spaces on our collective...

    I am a 'DAKS virgin

Thanks Tom and 1Adam12 and you other 'Daksters for the peak choices and accommodations list. I can detect some passion in your choices and some indecision as well. :D And 'yes' non-46ers are ok too as I am going to go for the northeast 770 or is that 771? (772??) anyway, MJ the Missin' Link...

    I am a 'DAKS virgin

At the risk of being chastised by my fellow hikers for being so obviously New Englo-centric, I have come to the decision that I must confess my sins to this forum and hope for redemption. I have never set foot on anything resembling a trail in the Empire State. I don't have any real good...

    Parazz website closing-new options?

you've not done Maine  bubba you have to do Maine! Wildest state east of the Big Muddy IMHO  but to keep this on thread, webshots is ok, though I find it a pain that if you want your photo comments to display in the slideshow you must put them in the photo title and then I...

    Waiting on 48...

or as Lowell George and the boys put it: "I've been kicked by the wind, robbed by the sleet, had my head stoved in but I'm still on my feet, and I'm still...willin'" good luck and thanks for the entertainment! :D

    Where can I buy Stabilicers?

One of the LLBean Stores should/may have them. I've been resisting the urge to replace my old pair and, well at least in Freeport stores anyway, they were staring at me from various aisles last week as I prepared for the BSP trip. I believe they are in the $32-$35 range. Poor man's crampons...

Building Good Karma on Waumbek - 2/16/07

Good post. I like your very descriptive TR. Your comments could easily be inserted into any one of the TRs from this last weekend. I felt like I certainly made inroads on my karmic debt! :D

    The Trail is Now Packed

How anyone could have rationalized NOT bringing snowshoes after such a large snowfall is beyond me. I know some folks like to push the gear limits but why take chances? Winter hiking is not such a minimalist sport rather one should be confident that they CAN indeed carry the extra gear. The...

    North Brother 2/18/07

mhrsebago, I hope the big storm that everyone is talking about 'possibly' hitting us this weekend holds off just a day or so for you folks. And despite the possibility of wind and associated drifting between now and next weekend, I bet the trail will be in fine shape and easy to re-pack if you...

I stand corrected arm! :o my bad! one of our party had referred to an older web map of the 'Sowdy field layout....or perhaps a different site  at any rate, none of us was aware of the changes, never thought to ask because we had been thinking we would get to 'Sowdy Field well before...

    North Brother 2/18/07

side note* We met BSP Ranger Jody on Saturday - she used to live at Nesowadnehunk Field for 10 years and she says that she used to break the Marston trail. I assume she meant as part of their winter Ranger duties. We tried to bribe her out of 'retirement' but she just chuckled as she sat on...

    North Brother 2/18/07

After breaking trail on the Williams Pond Road Friday morning and arriving after dark to our lean-to at Nesowadnehunk Field , the boyz and I took a slack day on Saturday and set up shop in the recently vacated bunkhouse. Good thing we did because the conditions were ripe for a near epic...

Hiking Out West vs. Mt. Washington, NH re: Weather Conditions, Gear, Etc.

I saw this thread and I was thinking as I was reading thru the posts that the suggestions put forth by jrbren and sierra in terms of getting a less technical exposure to hiking at altitude and give yourself a couple days to get your breath were right there with mine. Why not Colorado? Those...
