    Katahdin area and kids

My hat blew in about 12 feet into one of those boulder/caves on lower Dudley trail. I had to crawl in to get it, so I said fergetboutit, no way, uh-huh. I don't do caves-the $25 hat wasn't worth the nightmares I would've gotten. grog

Best post-hike restaurants, bars, pizzerias, ice cream, etc.

I agree with Denton, also like flat bread pizza and the little coffee shop next to it, both located in the Eastern Slope Inn building. Margurita Grill used to be one of my favorite places anywhere, but it always crowded so I don't stop. grog

    Katahdin area and kids

I agree with SK, South Branch campground is great. Center Ridge is a nice climb with excellent views and if you keep going Traveler loop is a challenging hike. You can also canoe on the pond. Shin village has good showers and is about 45 mins. away. A hike into Russell pond for one night would...

Making Safe Drinking Water (on the trail)

It seems so counter productive when I come to a stream I cup my hands full of untreated water to splash on my face to cool down, then I wipe my face dry with my camp towel, which seems to be a perfect place for the bacteria to grow into a thriving community, but I'm still alive, praise the Lord...

Making Safe Drinking Water (on the trail)

I also use polar pure, the taste doesn't bother me, and if it did I would just take a bite of food. I add nothing to my water because then it would add one more thing to clean. Onestep has a good point though. I think Americans are more a culture of paranoia than intelligence. grog

    Pants for Trail Maintenance

I've been finishing concrete for 37 years and when I trowel out a floor by hand I always wear knee pads. I also wear them when i do flat or low brick work. When I was a teen I had Osgood Schlatter disease and it left me with 2 one inch bumps below my knees which get irritated when I kneel on...

Andrew I was going to write that one time on Monadnock I saw a warthog fly below me and rite over inspiration point but I thought maybe I was misremembering. As far as BSP goes you had every rite to inform those people there are no electronics allowed in BSP and be very polite about it, just...

    noise pollution..low flying jets etc

One thing I do to avoid noise is to hike in the rain. The new credit card policy at Baxter state park allows me to look at the weather map and plan around the rain fronts. Last fall a massive rain front was covering the whole western part of the U.S.A. I called BSP, made my reservations and two...

    noise pollution..low flying jets etc

On september 12, 2001 I went for a hike on Monadnock specifically because the federal government banned all air traffic. It was amazing how quiet it was and because there were no jet entrails the sky was the most brilliant blue I have ever seen, marred only by a black cloud on the southern...

    Gore-tex footwear, yes or no

I have bean wearing soloman tech amphibians for 2 years now ( approx. 8 hundred miles ) and think they're great. If it is a rainy day, I'm hiking, these sneakers stick like glue. My feet don't smell any more , which makes my wife very happy. There is a strap on the heal that comes loose, but I...

    garter snakes on whiteface/passaconaway loop

garter snakes on Mt. Wachusett I have seen garter snakes on the loop trail ( southern exposure ) about 20 times this year, more then all my hikes combined through the years. I too wonder why so many this year ? There has also been more orange newts ( salamanders ? ) on Monadnock this year...
