Do you hike in the dark?

I enjoy hiking at night. I originally did a few night hikes as training for 100-mile races so as to get comfortable with being on my feet into the night. Familiar trails have an unfamiliar feel at night, animal eyes glow in your headlamp, and if it is a full moon night under leafless trees there...

care to discuss your winter day/climbing pack ?

Black Diamond's covert pack comes in ever-stylish black ;) http://www.backcountry.com/store/review/44458/BD-Covert-32 I see a LOT of skiers use this and would get one myself if I did not already have a fairly new Vaude ski/winter pack. What I love about the Covert is the diagonal mounting for...

Bears coming out kind of early...

^^^^^ At last, proof that bears DO poop in the woods! They must be pretty hungry right now.

    Ok, I'll do it... BIG SNOW STORM(s) 2/17, 2/19!

As Sargod1 pointed out, every snowfield/gully/chute/slide path has avy potential. Re. the Ammo in the particular, I read the TR of a group that skied it on Sunday and they cut loose a small slough.

    Killington and Ellen questions?

Bon matin, Yvon. Re the Killington approach - I was on the Bucklin Trail on Jan. 02 and 03. The road and parking lot are always plowed, with plenty of room in the lot. The Bucklin trail always seems to be well-travelled but have snowshoes just in case. Have fun!

    Cranberry Lake 50 trails update

Will do, Halfmoon. I will have it in the hopper for an early summer long run and will post here to see who is up for it.

    Cranberry Lake 50 trails update

I knew there were some ultrahikers who had done this loop in one push :D I would plan to run most of the loop so as not to be out there for 24 hours. Although I would have to allow time to stop and appreciate the scenery of course.

    Cranberry Lake 50 trails update

Thank you for the update. I do want to do this trail as a dayhike one of these (midsummer) days.

    AT/Rondonee question

Welcome to taking the plunge - you won't look back! I took up skiing 3 years ago with the intention of doing more AT than alpine so I bought AT boots, Fritschi Freeride bindings (heel locks/unlocks for downhill/touring) and a pair of all-mountain skis that would work fine in resorts (for...

    Lost dog - Sunday 12/13 - Twin Mt(Catskills)

This is terrible. I met Sudha and Rebel at the Gunks - he is a big friendly dog who snores in his sleep. I do hope someone finds him safe.

    Mt Hood Check List

I climbed Mt Hood a couple of years ago with two friends but did not photograph the registraton form. I know we checked off a LOT of the items. We had glacier travel gear, helmets, ice axes, ice screws, 2 stoves, cold weather clothes, etc. We were foolish enough to do in late August when it is...

Mixed feelings for Slide - Cornell - (The) Wittenberg - 10/6

A day of highs and lows, Tom. It is disheartening to see such trash. Once hiking up Witt from Woodland Valley campground we walked over a couple who were camped ON the trail. We gave them dirty looks and trod across a foam pad but said nothing.

Trail Runners - Gore-Tex or not - that is the question

After years of swearing never to need froo-froo Gore-Tex shoes, last year I gave in and bought a pair thinking they would be useful for winter trailrunning. However this past winter in southern NY snow was miserable and temps were never so cold. I was actually sweaty and...

    Mount Rainier!

Nice going, Dangergirl and team! Glad you had such a great experience. It brought back such memories for me too :) I found Rainier plus Aconcagua good training for attempting Denali unguided with two friends of mine. Granted we took the trade route up the West Buttress as we were definitely not...
