any problems with a yard Woodchuck?

Our woodchuck ate everything except the asparagus and tomatoes in our garden after one weekend away. Neighbors told us there was a mother and at least 4 "children". When we had greyhounds for pets they were not present. I guess they aren't concerned with our pet chicken now. Haven't seen much of...

Seven rescued from state park because it got dark...FINED??????

It happens, and I'm glad the family got out safely. Pawtuckaway doesn't have the biggest mountains or longest trails which can leading to less knowledgeable hikers or campers visiting and going for a walk in the woods. But the media ends with, "By being prepared and having a charged cell phone...

You know might be addicted to hiking...

-if you missed this thread the first time because you were thru-hiking the AT -if you think of time wasted at work meetings in miles, that meeting being 2 miles long (or about an hour of backpacking) -you can mentally sketch your next 3 day to 3 week trip without a guidebook -you have more...

Thoughts on a ten mile single car day hike in Southern New England

You could go up Statton, over it and down to the pond, then around the Stratton Pond Trail back to Kelly Stand Road. There is a .5-1 mile easy jaunt back to the car. Total trip: an enjoyable ~11 miles. The last four are flat as Lincoln woods. Maybe not quite that flat- there are rocks and roots...

    VT 4ks options...

Me, too. Glad you got out there. Heading out to the Monroe Skyline (LG to AG) over a few days with my kid soon. Should be great.

    VT 4ks options...

The Long Trail End to Ender's Guide has a list of people in the state that offer rides to hikers. It's a little book available through the Green Mountain Club, published annually. I do not have the latest version, but my version might have what you need. It's about 57 miles to backpack from...

    Making Dehydated Foods

I don't find dehydrating a lot of work. I love it and I love a lot of the meals I make for backpacking. I just got a new dehydrator with adjustable timer and temp that makes it even easier. No more thinking things will over dry if I leave them on overnight, just set the timer to turn off after x...

Any new compact cameras worth a look ?

What would you recommend now? I'm looking at the Canon Powershots. I had one I was pretty happy with. Mostly this will be used backpacking. (We have a Rebel EOS you helped me pick out years back. Thank you again.) I'm looking to spend $200 or less. Features I like: image stabilization, self...

LOST: camera (Parking lot for LT, VT Route 11/30)

The camera isn't important, but the pictures are priceless. I brought my daughter backpacking on the Long Trail and the last picture was at the trailhead at the ed of our hike where she found trail magic. So after that I went straight across the street and to my car. Now it is missing. If found...

Bugs on the way to The Bonds?

We were up on Galehead overnight Saturday, and the black flies were out. I agree they like kids better because my daughter and her cousin were bit more than I was. The naturalist at the hut did say they wind down around July 4th.

2 days just north of SF

My daughter and I were out in Muir Woods in Feb. and hiked a loop that started climbing up the Ocean View Trail and ended with the Dipsea Trail. I can't recall all the trails in between. We hiked about 5 miles that day. There was a Fern something or other Trail that looked great also, and I...

Hiking & Staying Found workshop for kids of all ages

We participated in this last year (or something like it) with our then 4 year old and found it very worthwhile. The one we went to was done by NH Fish and game. It included search and rescue dogs, a video and the strategies you mentioned. If we were around we'd go again. (We're up in the Whites...

    Sleeping Pad For Backpacking

I'm not sure what you are leaning towards at this point, but a couple weeks ago I bought my husband a Neoair on clearance at EMS Nashua. It rolls to water bottle size and is super big and comfy in use. Their clearance stuff is currently an additional 25% off. I think I got it for around $40. He...

Car camping in the Whites, suggestions please.

We once stayed at Russell Pond in Woodstock with nonhiking friends. The pond is good for a swim or canoe/kayak trip if you're up for that. It's the only car camping I've done in the Whites so I can't compare it to anything else that was mentioned.

    North Uncanoonuc Mountain Trip Report!

Thanks for the report. I'm not familiar with all the trails either, so I guess I'll try the same as you!

    Uncanoonuc #500
