Early Morning Hike on Pawtuckaway Mountain (Middle Peak)

I enjoyed your post too. We're camping in Pawtuckaway this summer with a bunch of toddlers. I picked the site knowing there was hiking to be had though I've never been there before. It looks and sounds great from your blog. Congrats on your first on the way baby. Ours just turned two.

Winter Stats - Tally 'em up!

NH 4K 10 I'm pretty happy in having gotten to 10 NH 4K. I did no winter 4K in past 2 years (car crash/pregnancy, baby). Late last fall I started taking one baby-free hike a month. Sometimes I was lucky enough to get out twice a month. 2 were new in winter. I hiked plenty of repeats. The...

Carrigain via raod and Signal Ridge Tr. 3/13/11

Sunday, March 13, 2011 Trail Conditions: Snow. We thought we could bareboot up the road, but in minutes we all stopped to put on snowshoes in the soft and new fallen couple of inches of snow. We bypassed the first two stream crossings with a bushwhack, the third was navigated with care on...

    Northern Lights

I've been on the lookout too. Last night and tonight were supposed to be possible nights for the auroras. I saw one from my back yard around 2003, I'd say. Very cool. Sadly if you're colorblind you might not see anything so spectacular.

Hiking with babies and young children ?

Ergo Kid carrier We use the Ergo with our daughter. Her first hike was at 5 weeks with an infant insert and as a front carrier. Now we use it as a back carrier. She's almost two. I love it. Small enough for outdoor events or a walk around the neighborhood and perfect for the mountains too. Our...

Best spots to find Gray Jays

I'd also recommend the trail to Pierce, Zealand, Jackson, and Mt. Field, esp. Pierce. But for minimal effort, try Mt. Willard.

    Mt. Washington- Lion's Head

Mt. Washington- Lion's Head Date of Hike: Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 Trail Conditions: All parts of the trail were packed out so that snowshoes were not needed. Bare booting was fine until the last flat section of Lion's Head. All then used full crampons and ice axes. The steep sections varied from...

    Winter Trail Snacks

I was out this weekend and some of my standard winter food froze. Actually everything except my Frito's and maybe my "healthy" Poptarts. I ate these in the car post hike, and they were okay. Here's some stuff that didn't make it (A couple of items were in the lunch/ snack bags of fellow hikers...

Opinions on Sunday hike to Kinsmans w Cold Snap

Hey Pedxing!! I am on that hike and have been meaning to look up your email and comment. Thanks for posting here and making it easy. My concern mirrors yours: the unknown abilities and not just abilities, but my speed and compatibility with the group's. In these conditions it isn't easy to slow...

    Women's snowshoes

Just as I thought I had my mind made up... I had Tubbs before my MSRs. (They did eventually break, but after many seasons.) An occasional problem I had was the straps freezing. I was just checking specs and these are the same width as the men's MSRs. However these are tapered, which should help.

    Women's snowshoes

Thanks! I had my doubts about the Tubbs and from what you've shared (LRiz and MEB) I think MSR is the way to go. Both of you are lucky enough to get out there way more than I do these days, but I'm going to check out the Evo's as opposed to the Lightnings for longevity. My men's lightening are...

    Women's snowshoes

I've been waiting for a sale to buy new snowshoes. For the past few years I've been using the MSR Lignthing and like them, but mine are the men's model. I think the women's would be better for me. EMS has a sale now 20% off all snowshoes except MSR.:( So I could get these. Tubbs Mountaineer...

Hey isn't PB a more powerful super hero than Superman? Big Earl, I want to get out once more before the year's end. I'm eyeing your trip for the 27th. I have family visiting all week from NJ and plans I can't get out of for the 29th and 30th. Need to check in with happenings at home before I...

Rattlesnakes On A Rainy Day 10/24/10

Hey! Thanks for this TR and the slideshow. I brought my mom out here years ago and needed a refresher on how gradual the trail was. I thought it might be a good potential first actually walking hike for our toddler. Hope we can give it a go before real winter arrives.

    Mt. Tecumseh

Date of Hike: 12/5/10 Trail Conditions: dusting of snow all the way up with icy sections easily maneuvered with traction starting after the 2nd stream crossing. Some lifts running and snow making was in action. Care was needed at the first river crossing as it had icy rocks on the way up...
