    Learning to Love a Mountain

Thanks everybody. So very glad you enjoyed it. I wish I had more time to hike never mind write a TR every Monday. Actually it's not the hiking that's tough, but the long drive to and from the mountains.

    Ways to Hike the 48

I hiked with a woman who juggled on each peak.

    Learning to Love a Mountain

(Gig, Baby Maxine, and I are on our way to North Conway for another weekend of light hiking. As a passenger in the backseat next to our sleeping baby, I finally find the time to type a trip report.) This past Wednesday, Daddy, you, and I climbed our largest mountain of late-Grand Mount...

Thanks, Tobit. Climbed Mt. Monadnock today. What better way to spend a day. Love the hug a rock.

    Foul/Severe weather and Through-Hiking

Right on. That's key. I did the same. I also took shoe off breaks several times throughout the day, wet or dry.

We had to put Genie down today

Audrey and Pat, I'm just getting around to reading about this and am so sorry for your loss. Too bad Genie couldn't have made the beer nights, as that is where I've met you. Your avatar of her sweetly covered by that blanket will be indelible in my memory. Heartfelt whimpers from our greyhounds...

    Foul/Severe weather and Through-Hiking

Hi Chip! It's just miserable until you get so wet you can't get any wetter. Then you're okay again. You have what some call the "freedom foot" and can walk without even bothering to avoid puddles or mud. You even get used to putting on wet, stinky socks the next morning. C'est la trail vie. :D...

    Child carrier security question

I don't have a 5 month old, but would lean towards what Sardog1 said from what I've researched. We use a front carrier with our baby, the Ergo with the infant insert (sold separately). She's been on three small hikes (Pack Monadnock, Wachusett, and N. Pack) so far starting at 5 weeks old. (She's...

    Mountain Bird Watch

I've participated in this for several years. It's a fun, rewarding endeavor. The Bicknell's song is lovely. You don't need to know a lot about birding to do it.

    bibler bivy tent

Ditto. I use this in the shelters as it takes up basically the same amount of space as a sleeping bag. I've easily used it over 200 nights, and it's in perfect shape.

    bibler bivy tent

I use a small homemade "tarp-tent" held up with one of my hiking poles. It only covers the upper half of the bivy.

    bibler bivy tent

bibler I have the Bibler bivy, not the tripod, but one with a hoop so that it doesn't lie on your face. I also have had a couple of one person tents and love my bivy the best. I've had it and used it regularly since 2001. It took me through the whole AT and has hiked at least 270 miles with me...

    Calling all AT thru hikers...

I think hiking the Long Trail as a primer is an awesome idea. First you learn a ton from the At hikers you meet in the first 100 miles of the LT/AT. Secondly you get a chance to try out you gear and what works for you. I thru-hiked the LT a few times before getting the time to hike the AT. Of...

    Calling all AT thru hikers...

I'll second Model T's Walking on the Happy Side of Misery. G\It's a great read that I agree tells a truer to life tale of trail life. Model T hiked the AT again in 2006 and wrote another book. I haven't read it though. I hiked the AT in 2005 too, and to prep I also used trailjournals.com. I...

Boston Globe article on grid hiking NH 48

Ditto. I've been a long time HikerEd fan. I'm young enough that if I'm still hiking at 62, I'll get the grid done. I won't miss out on hike simply for having done it in a particular month previously, but I will keep record of it all. :)

    Isolation, Sunday - November 2, 2008

Not this weekend for me. Probably a bit longer than I can handle right now, but I'm looking to get out too, for something short and small. Maybe North and Pack? Have fun!

    Mt. Hale, Hale Brook Trail

Date of Hike: 10/11/08 Trail Conditions: leaf covered, encountered no difficulties. The slightly muddy spots aren't really worth mentioning. Special Equipment Required: none Comments: First 4000'er after a July injury. Great to get out again. It was a good trail to take along our greyhound...
