40 years on the Applachian Trail

Congrats on your journey! This report and trek are more impressive to me than any trek that was done averaging 30 miles a day and having multiple persons on a support staff. It's about a love for the mountains, the journey, and the experience. Nice job.

    Hike near Lake Louise.

Nice pictures. The lake is so tourquois, i have never seen anything like it. I remember hiking up to a glacier past the lake, must have been somewhere near those peaks.

    Colden Trap Dyke – 9/07/08

I have had my eyes on doing this route for a few months since I saw it from the top of Algonquin and Iroquois. Great trip report and pictures from everyone. This will be on my must do list for 2009, once I find a sherpa to haul me up.

    Music while hiking

I downloaded a "nature" cd onto my MP3 player and listen to that while I hike. The birds and streams have extra base and treble, much more realistic than real nature. I am just not sure how they got the birds and streams into the studio to do the recordings. Just kidding, I never listen to...

Things to do in Bar Harbor if it's raining?

Jordan Pond house is a nice spot for lunch, with a gift shop. The popovers there are great. The quiet side of the island is worth a visit too to see Seawall, Southwest Harbor, and there is an antique auto museum and pottery shop in Seal Harbor.

    Showers near Baxter State Park

I always just swim in Togue Pond after Katahdin. It is a beautiful pond and has great views towards Abol slide as well.

    8/30 The Forehead, Mansfield-Hell Brook/LT/Maple Ridge/Wampahoofus/LT/Cliff/ Ski tra

Good stuff. I came down Hellbrook last year. It was wet but it wasn't too bad. If I recall, it seemed like the entire trail was a stream.... I would recommend hiking it the way you did it though.

    Millinocket lodging, meals

Gate normally opens around 5:30-6'ish if I recall correctly from all the times I have been in line. Maybe even a little earlier, last time I was there I started my hike prior to sunrise.

Taking my dog to Maine to hike/vacation

All of the crowds are gone once school starts up, you should find the island very quiet, except for a few tourists here and there on the weekend. I would just recommend reading a guidebook before you decide which hikes you do with the dog, as quite a few of them have steep ladders.

    A Lower Range Traverse-ADK's

Thanks for the comments and info Mark. I remember first seeing some slides in the ADK's in a trip report by someone a few years ago and was amazed at how great the pictures looked in black and white. I forget whom it was, but it was someone on this site. By the way, I took a look at your photos...

    A Lower Range Traverse-ADK's

When you see a beautiful gal walk by you, you can't help but take a little extra look, maybe do a little neck snap after she walks by. Your heart beats a little faster, and you feel like God took a little extra time on that one. I get that feeling once in a while, but mostly I feel that way when...

    Vermont Hiking Times...

I did the hike hung over/a little bit altered still, i think it took 8 hours or so. I cannot really remember. It is an easy hike in a normal state, less than 3,000 vertical if i recall over around 11 miles or so. I recommend doing the hike sober.

    smashed femur

That sounds really awful, sorry to hear that. I had my ACL rebuilt and cartilage sewn up in my knee 12 years ago (Atlanta Olympics), the worst month of my life in constant pain. One of the only things that kept me going through the 6 months of re-hab was that it was my last year of skiing in...

Boston Globe: "A beautiful place to die"

Maybe the dangers were a bit over-hyped, but i thought it was a decent article. Keep in mind that 95% of the population that reads the article rarely hike Mt Washington or the other Presidentials. When these "city folks" hike in the Presidentials, I see a lot that are not even remotely prepared...

    Camel's Hump Acess Roads

I have not been there recently, but there are a good amount of houses on both of those roads, so I assume that both roads would be fine. In the off chance that the roads were too bumpy and rutty to drive, you can also hike south on the long trail from the trailhead right along the winooski river.

    Any recent Isolation feedback

I went in to Isolation via Glen Boulder two weeks ago, and that last stretch down the Davis path over to the top of Isolation was very muddy. That was before the week of heavy rains. I did that stretch in the dark, and sunk deep into the water and mud a few times. It was not fun, but i have been...

    The Precipice trail-Acadia

Definitely visit Acadia in the fall during foliage season. The park is empty of the hordes of tourists and is an awesome place to be.

    The Precipice trail-Acadia

I am not a big fan of heights, but most of the trail does not bother me too much. The straight up vertical iron rung climbs were fine, it was the walking along the ledges part that I hate. My feet are big and clunky, my shoulders are broad, and when i walk across these narrow areas, I feel like...
