They are performing trail maintenance, building bog bridges and even relocating trails. I had an opportunity to work...

Franconia Ridge Traverse - Lafayette, Lincoln, Liberty and Flume - 2013-02-10

Just to let you know, Kevin, I could see Whiteface with my naked eye, no other aids were necessary. I could see several other peaks in the 'Daks but I couldn't name them. From Lafayette, I can also see Macomb with my naked eye on a good day. One just has to know where to look. The picture I...

Franconia Ridge Traverse - Lafayette, Lincoln, Liberty and Flume - 2013-02-10

I happened to hike Moosilauke on Sunday and took this picture from the summit. This shows the Sugarbush ski area in Vermont and to the right in the distance is Mt. Whiteface in NY. I also have seen Macomb from the summit of Lafayette before. I have a picture of that also that I'll look for. John

    The Osceola's for #1,000 and #1,001

Went up Osceola from Tripoli Rd. Large sections of very icy spots as to be expected on this side of the mountain. Going up, I didn't wear any traction and was able to pick my way around the icy spots. There was a dusting of snow to 1"-2". From Osceola to East peak, conditions improved...

Smoky Mountains National Park - time to visit?

We went to the Smokies the last week of April a number of years ago. The last week of April is normally their peak wildflower season and we agree. We counted almost 90 different wildflowers in bloom. There were no bugs although they did have a very late season snowstorm that dropped 6" on the...

Finishing the NH 100 Highest Peaks on Mt. Dartmouth 9-2-12

The 770 are the summits over 3,000' in the northeast. The NHHH would be included in that list but the NH200 are not. The NH200 has 25 peaks that are below 3,000'.

Finishing the NH 100 Highest Peaks on Mt. Dartmouth 9-2-12

There are actually several variations of the NHHH lists and that is not the one I used. There are a few differences. Last I knew, there have been less than 30 people that have completed the NHHH in winter. That is a great achievement to do those peaks in winter considering approx. 35 of the...

    The Stoic Life of Cairns

I did a hike yesterday and walked a few sections of trail that have the best cairns in the Whites. In this trip report, I decided to just show pictures of cairns. Cairns are our watchdogs (showing us the way to go), our saviors (at times), our friends (some of them we've seen over and over...
