    The Demented King Loop (8-29-12)

Nice loop. I did something similar, but different, last year. We went up the Great Gully trail, along Gulfside, down the Sphinx trail, up the Six Husbands trail, back along Gulfside and down Valley Way. We had intended dropping down Chemin des Dames but it was getting late and dark, so just...

Finishing the NH 100 Highest Peaks on Mt. Dartmouth 9-2-12

Yesterday, September 2, 2012, my wife June completed her New Hampshire 100 Highest Peaks list. We had hiked North & South Huntington on Friday, East Scar on Saturday and then Dartmouth on Sunday to complete her NH100 Highest peaks. We were joined by friends Keith and Julie D. and their dog...

Fun & Views on Owl's Head, The Owl Head and The Owl Head Cliffs 8-29-12

I made a quick trip up to the summit of the 4K Owl's Head via the usual trails including my version of the Black Pond bushwhack. There are a thousand and one permutations of the BP whack and if they get you to where you're going, then you had a great whack. After lunching on the summit with...

East and West Goose Eye via the "not recommended" route 8/30

I did the north branch (and the south branch) of the Wright trail last year and I found nothing major wrong with it. A few rotting steps and bog bridges here and there but it's still better than probably a lot of the trails in the Whites! I'm glad you went for it!

Who Said There Are No Views When the Summit is in the Clouds?

Today we hiked Caribou Mountain just over the border in Maine. It was fairly warm and humid today and it looked like the summit was going to be in the clouds and it was for the most part. Clouds would clear out every once in a while and we would have some views, but mostly we had no long range...

King Ravine and the Five Adams 8/7/12

Nearing the summit of Adams looking back at J. Q. Adams and Madison with Star Lake reflecting blue. From the summit of Adams 5 looking back at Mt. Adams. A look back at Adams 5 and Mt. Jefferson. Approaching the summit of Sam Adams with a view to Mt. Adams across a sea of rocks. The...

King Ravine and the Five Adams 8/7/12

It was a beauty day with 130 mile visibility so I wanted to get high. Looked at my various projects and decided King Ravine warranted another trip, especially on a day like today. While I was at it, I would summit Adams. Then I thought, why not bag all the Adams. So that's what I did. The...

    NH 48 speed record

Great job, Ryan and huge kudos to Tim for his offer to pace you across the Pemi. That's what it all about even though we all lose sight of that sometimes. Congrats to your support team who were also short on sleep and also had to deal with the heat and humidity. Well done, all. We're all...

    Great Gulf Wildflower Extravaganza 7-29-12

We had a chance to spend the day in the Great Gulf and to witness a wildflower extravaganza. Lots of different flowers blooming and not just in one's and two's but hundreds and even thousands in some cases. It was an in the clouds day but that often leads to much brighter colors in the...

A Nice Day on Mt. Jefferson

I did a quick jaunt up Mt. Jefferson yesterday. Quick in some spots that is, and really slow in other spots just so I could spend more time enjoying the day. It was a great day. Climbing the Caps Ridge trail. More Caps and then the summit. Looking across the lawn to Mt. Washington. A...

A Long But Incredibly Rewarding Three-fer: West Baldface, Sable, Chandler Peaks

Lefty- I have been working on my own personal State of NH fire tower list (close to 100 peaks) of peaks that have towers, had towers or had been selected to have towers put on them but the towers were never built for whatever reason. I don't have that many peaks left. I had kind of put this...

    4's Over 70?

You are correct, Roy. Jerry Horne completed a full round of the winter 4k's starting at the age of 75 and completing them at the age of 77. Here's a link to the story: http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?35038-A-New-Winter-4K-Record!&highlight=horne This is still an amazing story. We...

    Spring near Cabot Cabin

Since a picture is worth a thousand words... The spring spur is a sharp drop down from the trail. Just keep on going until you get to it. I haven't been to it since storm Irene so I don't know how the spring fared from the storm.
