History of the Martha's Mile Trail

Some friends and I climbed Cherry Mountain back in November 1980 and the lower steps were missing back then. It was a wooden structure fire tower. We did not attempt to climb the tower but it must have had tremendous views. John

A Grid Finish and a Flurry of Red Line Finishers with a Big Same Day Double Finish

There have been a flurry of recent grid and red line finishers this past July and now August. The recaps are below. Congratulations to all finishers! On July 2, 2011 Pete Crane (note: not Peter Crane that everyone knows from the Mt. Washington Observatory) from Burlington, MA pulled off the...

Is it the height of Thru Hiker Season?

We passed 20 thru hikers yesterday on a hike along the Mahoosuc trail. The full monte (no not that kind) thru hikers (about 10 of them) had started mostly in late March. The section hikers (about 10 of them) don't count ;) since they're not in the true wave and they started at various times...

    Bushwhacker's Manicure

Somewhere in NH......... It always pays to manicure your nails before a good bushwhack since one never knows when the all-seeing camera will capture your digits in action. :D Looking good while steadying the jar for opening. Where do we go from here Dear?

Castle Ravine and Emerald Bluff - Good Combo

Re: RMC 100, very soon........ :) You're right about former viewpoints. This one came to mind immediately, the Eye of the Needle along the Four Soldiers Path. So many young trees have grown up that the view is difficult to see and this was in November 2010 after the leaves had fallen. The...

Castle Ravine and Emerald Bluff - Good Combo

Back on June 19 I hiked the Castle Ravine trail and then did some loopy action around the summit of Mt. Jefferson. On July 19 I hiked up to Emerald Bluff which sits on Israel Ridge and has a great view into Castle Ravine. The pictures are a combination of both hikes. Emerald Bluff would be...

The Landing Camp Trail. Has anyone else hiked it?

Audrey---- I DO like the Rob Brook trail. Hiked it mid-June this year. Having heard stories about the condition of the trail, I was pleasantly surprised by how dry it actually was (for me at least). I did not get my feet wet all day! Not much mud and it seemed there was always a log or...

The Landing Camp Trail. Has anyone else hiked it?

We said the same thing yesterday, glad there's not much uphill today, as it was pretty warm and humid. Couple the heat and humidity with the everlasting bugs and a short hike without much elevation was perfect.

It was great seeing you guys that morning. Sounds like you had another great trip and we look forward to sharing a hike with you two someday soon.

The Landing Camp Trail. Has anyone else hiked it?

The abandoned trail you refer to is probably the Upper Ammonoosuc trail which the Landing Camp trail intersects appoximately in the middle of the old UA trail. We followed the UA trail for a short bit to the north until it got really muddy and thick and turned back there.

The Landing Camp Trail. Has anyone else hiked it?

We hiked the short (1.9 miles) Landing Camp trail on 7-17-11. This turned out to be a fun little hike. There's lots of mud, bogs, and water but also some dry ground and neat areas. Have a look at some of the things we spotted along the trail. Very boggy, bog bridges with more growing green...

Old Speck and the Western Half of the Grafton Loop 7-16-11

We decided to visit the Grafton Notch area which we hadn't been to in a while. Went up the Eyebrow trail to Old Speck and proceeded down the western half of the Grafton Loop trail to Sunday River Whitecap and then back to our spotted car, visiting the four backcountry sites along the way...

Another Yellowstone grizzly attack, different outcome

Back on July 4 of this year, we were heading down the Base Station Rd when all of a sudden cars started slowing down. When we could finally make out why everyone was slowing down, we saw that it was a black bear slowly sauntering right down the middle of the road. It meandered on the road for...

    Hiking the Cog ?

I have no idea what the official rules are but we (two of us) walked along side the cog tracks this July 4 starting from where Westside trail crosses the tracks. A couple of trains passed us going up and down and no one said anything to us. No one said anything when we got to the bottom and...

    Semi-Annual Redlining Contest

What's that now, Thom? Four beers I've won? These are going to taste really good. Maybe we'll cash them in after your TMB trip. We're interested in the TMB and need some advice. Also, yes getting really close, double digits left.
