Flume Slide, Franconia Ridge (N) & OBP 6/22

Trails were dry. A few bugs approaching Little Haystack (south side). Flume Slide is a nice workout. Hiked the ridge from Flume to Lafayette. Nothing out of the ordinary. Old Bridle Path down to spotted car.

In the market for a new backpack

I have been using an Osprey Atmos [50] for three-season hiking since 2007. It has plenty of space and doesn't feel large or heavy. The suspension on this pack is fantastic. The ventilated back, which is a mesh material with space between it and the pack itself, contours to your back. I was...

canadian wildfire smoke choking the whites...

When I was driving back to Boston on the expressway last night around 7:15, I had similar memories of LA. At first sight of the barely visible skyline I was thinking smog, but the sun filtering through the haze didn't have the dense, grey coloring.

canadian wildfire smoke choking the whites...

Wellfleet & Truro on Cape Cod this morning has the obvious burning pine scent lingering in the air. Thick haze, but not sure if it is localized fog or remnants of smoke. I assumed the smell was local until I read the news, as there were no signs of it late last night.

Woman flown off Denali after refusing to climb any farther

Chenoweth (the ranger) should have asked for his tent back and left her there. Eventually, she would have realized that there is only one way down the mountain.

playing May 1 in Boston! :)

Just a quick note that 1154 Washington Street is in the South End and not South Boston (Southie). Didn't want anyone to head the wrong direction if you plan on driving in on I-93.

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

I wholeheartedly agree. NH, ME & VT would each (or together as a group) reduce or eliminate most S&R funding problems if a similar system were created here in New England. The only reason that I would favor an insurance option like the one I describe in my previous post (#381) is that the...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

This dilemma is eliminated. If you don't have the insurance, you're billed the fixed amount. The amount and reason for billing is unbiased. Why should rescues in the woods be free of financial obligation, when rescues anywhere else are not? If your car breaks down 100 miles from home and you...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Lots of great posts here regarding this particular situation (Mason). What I am concerned about is the future. What happens when another person is rescued and NH asks/demands reimbursement? My two cents: An insurance program set up to offset the costs associated with rescues. At any of...

I have some Bergelene pieces that are approaching 10 years old. Still holding up (knock-on-wood). Really is pretty comfy.

    What's the best 10-pt crampon?

Another vote for the Grivel G-10. Mine are about 10 years old (no plates). I also have a pair of G-12s (for Koflachs) but I find myself just packing the G-10s for convenience.

    Snowshoeing around Stowe

Great suggestion. Please remember to park in the upper parking lot (the one on the right as you drive in). This lot is for GMNF/GMC use. The other lots belong to the Lake Mansfield Trout Club.

My Big Black Boots - A review of my Limmer Standards

I agree. Went up in March of 2002 to grab a pair of (non-custom) Standards. Peter had me kicking the walls with the toes and heels to make sure the fit was good. He even stitched spacer-pads on the inside of the tongues to prevent slipping. Fantastic.
