New England late winter/early spring torch thread

Report here how warm it's been in your area, how much snow you have/had, how much has melted, etc etc. We hit 80 degrees in Lebanon today. I took a walk along some hills about 900 feet tall, then onto the AT in Hanover up along Velvet Rocks (1200 ft), and I saw only 3 patches of snow, and a...

Another example of "Hikers" not being prepared for the conditions.

Possibly.... I think it might be on a side trail near the One Mile Road. I have pictures somewhere. Still, I have a hard time believing that they had such a hard time recovering that they needed to call for rescue, especially since they were wearing some sort of traction. It ain't that steep...

Sunday Mountain On A Thursday 2-23-12

Part 2 The trip down Sunday Mtn was fairly straight forward. There were also some really impressive ice flows along the way. Like this one... Before long, I was on the dirt road, ready for a nice 2.2 walk. I figured I would make quick time here. One section of the road was not...

Sunday Mountain On A Thursday 2-23-12

Sunday Mtn from Cross Rivendell Trail On Thursday, I took a hike along the Cross Rivendell trail in Orford NH, from the foot of Mt Cube, west through the forest, eventually up and down Sunday Mtn (1,823 ft) then along some back roads, across a couple more trails which led me to the town of...

    Spring comes to NH?

While there isn't an official place to measure snow in Lebanon, we've had 4 different days where a "trace" of snow has been measured. That means too little snow to measure. A trace can be a snowflake, or up to a dusting. So technically, there has been 0 inches this month in Lebanon. I wonder...

    Evolutionary View of Lyme Disease

I guess the author should have said de-evolutionary view of Lyme disease. I am all about seeing new views and attempting to understand new perspectives on certain things such as this, although some of his explanations sound kind of kooky. This is getting a little off topic to...

    Evolutionary View of Lyme Disease

I went through this article a couple of times, some interesting things in it. I'm not sure what I believe. But hey, it's always good to see another view on something that is as tough to diagnose and treat as Lyme disease. Basically he speaks of getting rid of all wireless devices, or...

    GPS, Maps, and cameras ILLEGAL

I would think that as long as you stick to a trail, to where you are given permission to hike, for example, the Belknap or Ossipee Range, then there shouldn't be an issue. I don't know the rules, and am hardly a lawyer, so take that last statement with a grain of salt and realize it is just my...

    Mt Hale, Complete! 1/28/12

One more pic that I particularly liked....the Hale Brook trail in winter really is peaceful, and this is one of those areas. http://grouseking.smugmug.com/New-Hampshire/2012/1-28-12-Mt-Hale/21232103_kMJ2cp#!i=1689997764&k=WwWjqPP

Coyotes: Followed by a pack in Belknaps. Anyone else ever have an issue with them?

While I have never actually seen a coyote before, I don't really think there is anything to be particularly afraid of. I can definitely see how it would be freaky if something seems to be "stalking" you, but in the white mtns, I would think its more of a curiousity thing on their part. Urban...

    Mt Hale, Complete! 1/28/12

Thanks freighttrain! One thing though, this was my 4th winter 4000 footer, just the first one I've hit since 2008. I've done Hale, Tom, Tecumseh, and Pierce. I agree about the time. No matter what the conditions, its always a slog up the mountain, and then a fun romp back down to the trailhead.

    Hanover Outdoors Closing

If anyone lives in the Upper Valley area, and are looking for deals, Hanover Outdoors is closing its doors. The link says some things are 40-50 percent off. I'm not sure when they are closing, but here is the link. http://www.hanoveroutdoors.com/2012/01/closing-sale/ It also says that a new...

    Mt Hale, Complete! 1/28/12

Back The weather on the summit, for the first few minutes, was beautiful. Before the clouds took over, there was no wind, and the temp was 29 degrees. Can you believe that, 29 degrees on a 4000 footer in mid January! I know it happens, but its still pretty rare to be up there when it is...

    Mt Hale, Complete! 1/28/12

Nice to see I really can hit a 4000 footer in winter, now matter how easy others say it may be. This was a very spur of the moment trek, with my friend suggesting we hike it the day before. I was all about it, because I did not want to have Hale to be my 48th 4000 footer, and I will be winding...

Coyotes: Followed by a pack in Belknaps. Anyone else ever have an issue with them?

I hear coyotes on the hill behind the apt on most evenings when I am around. They are quite the singers! So it doesn't surprise me that this is happening more and more. I remember reading a news story about someone being stalked while walking...somewhere in Essex county, MA? It was a more...
