Well there is an interesting Southerly flow upslope going on tonight across the whites. Its a rare wind direction for it, and in these situations, the whites do much better than the greens. I'll be curious to see how much falls at the backcountry recording stations tomorrow AM, esp places like...

Haha, hey. Winter hasn't really impressed me this year, so its hard to get excited or even pay attention to what is going on. I am sure the mtns will eventually make up for lost time because they always do...but right now its kind of a snore.

    Carter Dome Abort! 1/14/11

Carter Notch is beautiful...one of my fav notches, behind only Zealand Notch. I'll be back soon enough to tackle some peaks when the weather is not so rough. Yeah, glad I got out. And you're welcome! CLoudy winter days can sometimes make for tough pic conditions, but thankfully there was...

    Carter Dome Abort! 1/14/11

The lenticulars were pretty neat yesterday, the best was at the end of the day with sunset, but my camera was nearly frozen, so it was time to pack it in. :) Yeah I saw the topo map of the terrain. and figured the other way was easier. But I wanted to see the notch up close and person, and I...

    Carter Dome Abort! 1/14/11

For 5 years, I've wanted to get over to the Carters and check out the Notch, and then possibly tackle a mountain. Yesterday was my first opportunity. Sadly, I ended up quite short. The very cold weather, combined with the extremely steep trail and loose unconsolidated snow and what seems to...

Your Top 10 Photos of 2011...

Spectacular photos, as usual. Simply incredible. For me, it was tough to narrow em down. But here goes nothing....I have a top 10 with one honorable mention. In no particular order: Zealand Notch foliage ready for the Lafayette assault I never told you that you could take MY picture...

Those #$%! teases at NWS Gray

Thankfully we have till April for winters around here. I say, give it time. There is some indication that the overall pattern will be changing around the 15th or slightly after. The way I see it, we've had quite a few amazing winters all in a row. We were bound to see a dud at some point...

The Many Sides of Smarts Mtn

Over the year, I noticed that I have several different pics of Smarts Mtn, a very prominent peak in the Lyme area. Since I am sick, and swimming in my own yack, I figured I'd do something a little different....don't worry, I cleaned my lap top first. Smarts from along the moose mtn ridge, not...

    River Otters in WMNF area?

Very cool article. Out of all of these, I've only seen a fisher...of all things, one that is least commonly seen. I bet there are river otters in some of the larger rivers coming out of the whites, the the Pemi, Saco, Androscoggin, maybe even the Swift river... Not sure about some of the...

Beaver Activity on the Lamprey River Floodplain

That place looks nice, though I wonder how much poison ivy lines the trails heading down towards the river. Growing up in SE NH, I couldn't really go on too many adventures due to the ivy. But I will be sure to check out the Lamprey in Epping next tinme I am down there. Have you ever seen...

Hiking from the summit of Washington....

Well now... I didn't expect there to be this much discussion on the subject. The reason for the thread was to ask about the validity of hiking from Washington to Adams from the summit, and wondering if it counted according to AMC...or from other trailheads along the auto road, like the Alpine...

Hiking from the summit of Washington....

Yeah, thats what it sounds like. And that is why I asked the question in the first place, because it seemed so strange for it not to count.

Hiking from the summit of Washington....

Excellent idea. I was just going to say....if the AMC ever amends the rules that have been set, I think if a hike ends up being over a certain distance, say over 10 miles, it should count, no matter where you park your car. Perhaps this will bring up more questions, but I like it.

Hiking from the summit of Washington....

Yup thats what I meant. I still think its strange that they don't allow hiking from different trailheads along the Washington auto road to count. I understand that it would create an unfair advantage if you are hiking up to Washington, but Adams, Jefferson, etc? That is why I thought when the...

Hiking from the summit of Washington....

Or, if when they are saying to avoid the auto roads for any hikes to count, and not just say, Washington, Mansfield, or Equinox, then I guess my question is answered. AIn't that a shame.

Hiking from the summit of Washington....

Ahh, I see. So under the rules, one can hike from the Alpine Garden trailhead over to Monroe, or down to Isolation. ( I haven't checked mileage, but that trek just sounds like an amazing way to spend a day. Talk about getting your fill of above treeline stuff on a beautiful summer day.) :)...

    Snow north.

Excellent. Do you think this is one of those "notches on north" snowfall? Or are the whites as a whole cashing in?

Hiking from the summit of Washington....

Yeah I actually don't plan on doing that. I don't know her skill level as a hiker, so I won't go there. But those questions made me wonder if hiking from the summit of Washington over to say, Adams, Jefferson, etc would count as a 4000 footer. Or say, if you drive to the Alpine Garden trail...
