Mt Monadnock to North Pack Monadnock Route?

The Cranberry Meadow Pond Trail and the Raymond Trail connect South Pack Monadnock to almost downtown Peterborough in 4 miles, cutting off some of the road travel. http://www.monadnockconservancy.org/pdf/CMPT-trail-guide-and-map_FINAL.pdf

    bony goat trails?

There are a few steep rocky sections on the Wapack on N & S Pack, and the upper half of the Raymond Trail on S. Pack has some steep rocky areas. The Holt trail on Cardigan and the Winslow trail on Kearsarge are steep and rocky, but shorter. The old powerline on Watatic is very rocky, but even...

Common Loon, 3 Toed Woodpecker, others endangered in the lower 48

These are nowhere near the quality of Chip's pics, but this is the first chick to survive past July on North Pond just west of Bethel, ME in many years. They were taken in mid August this year 50' from my parent's cabin.

Andrew Thompson breaks NH48 speed record

I do speed hikes on local trails to compare to previous times to use as a evaluation of fitness levels. Occasionally, I relax and put my watch/cell phone away and take a relaxing walk in the woods. I do admit to "timing" myself on Monadnock last weekend, but I still took the time to clear many...

    Sad Day on Jefferson

Thank you, I was trying to think of a nice way to say this. I would have helped, but I would understand if others felt differently. If it was a emergency rescue situation, I would expect that everyone would help to the best of their abilities.

Thoughts on a ten mile single car day hike in Southern New England

The Wapack is 21+ miles long, but doesn't any/many true loop options. One that might do is using the Ted's and Carolyn's trails on North pack for a 6 mile loop, then adding the 4.8 mile out and back to South Pack. I'm was thinking the SW Mass idea would be closer, but they are both about the...

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

Timing can make a big difference!! I had the top of Monadnock almost to myself at 6pm this evening. I could only see 2 other people on the mountain and it was beautiful out. I bet tomorrow on a nice holiday Saturday will be very different!!

Thoughts on a ten mile single car day hike in Southern New England

Here's a good loop I did a while ago. Start at Mt. Washington State Park headquarters. Hike up the Alander Mountain Trail to Alander Mountain(great views to the west). Then take the Loop trail south to the South Taconic trail. Continue south to Brace Mountain(great views in all directions)...

Is Silnylon tarp worth the extra cost over Walmart special?

I'm not a fan of Walmart, but I did pick up one of these Hiking Hammock For $15.50, its just as good as my previous one from Hammock Bliss that was closer to $50. It works great in the late summer/fall when the bugs are gone, and doesn't break the bank if you're not really sure about hammock...

Is Silnylon tarp worth the extra cost over Walmart special?

I would not pay the extra!! Maybe if I was doing the AT, but even then..... My setup is an 8'x10' 3mil plastic tarp. I like the extra room for the hammock. Haven't weighed it but I'm sure that its lighter than 18 oz.

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

The overflows on Sat. at Appalachia and Falling Waters were the largest that I've ever seen. I was worried about finding a spot at Caps Ridge, but it wasn't too bad, but people were parked on the road. The trail itself was busy, but everyone was friendly and I enjoyed chatting with some of the...

    Headlamp Recommendation For Night Hiking

I used THESE Energizer Headlamps from Walmart for may years but when I picked up a discounted "return" BD Spot for $19 from EMS, I was converted. Still carry a Princeton Ion as a spare, but the BD Spot is my go to lamp for hiking ,biking and late night care car and appliance repairs and power...

West Royce and East Royce Mountain 7-24-2014

The best views on West Royce are reached by following a herd path that first heads north off of the ledges with the large cairn, then meanders west and northwest, reaching the "northeast ledges" in about 10 minutes. They provide amazing views west to the Caters and Presis, north to the...

    Headlamp Recommendation For Night Hiking

I really like the BD spot, and the new ones have 130 lumens and can be found HERE for under $30. Other places are selling the older 90 lumen version for $29.

I was also going to suggest this. On a nice day, you get great views from Bald and Kinsman.

    Great Gully Trail To Descend

I have been up and down Chemin Des Dames numerous times, and while it is steep, it is probably the easiest to descend of the three. There is one very short boulder "cave" but it is not difficult. Another note, on my last trip to the ravine, I opted for the Scar Trail when heading down the...

Snoring and staying at an AMC hut advice?

Bring an MP3 player with ear inserts that don't leak lots of noise. The batteries will probably be dead by morning, but the soft music is better than the snoring. I've never spent a night in the huts, but is has worked in tents, and I almost hate to add, in my bedroom with my spouse. ;) Just...
