    Franconia Ridge Knife Injury

"Stabbed himself in a lower extremity". Wondering since they didn't just say "leg", if a fine might be among the least of his worries.

    Altimeter advice

I have a Highgear Altiforce altimeter watch that I bought on Ebay 6 years ago and it has always worked great. The only time that the altimeter did not function was if the battery was getting weak. All other functions would work fine but the altimeter seemed be very sensitive to lower power. I...

    Camera Suggestions

I have been very happy with my SX-130, which is essentially the same camera except it has 12.1MP and 12x optical. It's only drawback for me besides the lack of an optical viewfinder is that it is borderline on size for being a pocket camera. I usually carry it in a fanny pack. Another...

Osteoarthritis of hip -- when is surgery recommended?

My father in law is in his 70's and unlike you, is complete couch potato, and we were really concerned when his Dr. recommended hip replacement. I was amazed at how quickly he was back on his feet and how quickly(within 2 weeks) he ditched the cane that he had been using for 6+ months prior to...

Need advice on my trail shoes

You really might want to try the Moab's, they are highly reviewed on almost every sellers site, and traction is one of the high points. I have not owned any other Merrell styles, so I won't say that all models are good, but both of my brothers also own these and rave about them.

Need advice on my trail shoes

I had grip problems with a lot shoes, I finally invested in a pair of Merrell Moab Ventilators. They have a fairly stiff sole with nylon shank so I never feel sharp rocks like I did with some trail runners, and the grip is excellent. From the Whites to worn smooth rocks on Monadnock, their...

    Car camping tent

For car camping, I have looked for a cheap tent that fits my needs spacewise, and then bought a tarp that gives good coverage. Saves $ and never had a leak in many years.

Here is BobandJeri's GPS track for the 2004 hike from their site, looks like approx. 5,300 +/- for the end to end.

    Cumulative Elevation gain for Wapack

A bunch of us did this back in 2004, was it really that long ago? Wapack thru hike report It is tough to plan between mud and bug season. We missed most of the mud but not the bugs. Let me know if you are thinking of going. I'm in better hiking shape than I was back then. :)

Still plenty of snow in the north Country

I skied this weekend in the Bethel Maine area and in the woods there is easily 3-4 feet of snow and this was at elevations below 3,000 feet.

Buy now or wait? (Snowshoes & crampons)

On local trails, I tried pros with trail runner on hard pack. They will flex, but not enough for a true running gate.

Buy now or wait? (Snowshoes & crampons)

I've worn the pros with trail runners once, won't do it again, the spacer does not bend much, but it won't break. Very interesting to do a trail run with running shoes that don't flex. :) These should be used with a hiking boot, not trail runners.

Buy now or wait? (Snowshoes & crampons)

These aren't true crampons, but would get you up most New England mountain trails. They go on sale occasionally for $60-$65. I really like mine for conditions when microspikes just aren't enough. Edit: Peakbagger beat me to the punch. I have both Hillsounds, the trail crampon, and the trail...

    Monadnock area hikers/after work hike

Hi Guys, Rob, are they now plowing the road to the new Dublin trail head? Not that it really matters with the base that we currently have. With that in mind, I doubt that snowshoes are needed on the Wapack. Spikes definitely! I haven't been up there in a couple of weeks, as I'm working 6-7...
