    Goodrich Rock ladder = broken

The ladder up to Goodrich Rock (side trail off the Greely Ponds trail) is broken. Two rungs came off in my hands while climbing it and the left upright rotted thru and broke in half. Needless to say I didn't make it up to the top. I would not recommend climbing it.

Justice Souter to retire so he can spend more time hiking in New Hampshire!

I was going to say "how do you know he isn't already a member?" But then I realized why would he ever want to read this site? People arguing over minutiae is his day job, I'm sure he has enough of that already. :p

    Missing hiker found

Yeah so in addition to being charged with reckless negligence or negligent recklessness, he should expect a huge fine for littering.

Is the "KATAHDIN" sign ready to be replaced?

Of course they should replace the sign. They should mark the summit the same way as the half-way point to Chimney Pond. Nothing says "Forever Wild" quite like that.

    Superfeet?

The green ones have more or less cured my plantar fascitis problems. Can't say about blisters because I rarely get them anyway. My advice is to break them in first though. I was told when I bought them to not wear them for more than about 4 hours the first time, and like an idiot I wore them...

    How are ice bridges formed?

look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frazil_ice something I learned about while working at the Cold Regions Lab in Hanover back in the early '90s. The setup they had for experimenting on this was impressive. They had a scale model (1/4th I think it was) of the Ompompanusic River in one of...

    What tracks are these

I'm pretty sure it was Snowpeople (a distant relative of the Sandpeople) who always travel in single file to conceal their numbers.

    Liberty/Flume via Liberty Springs/ FRT 1/31/09

It was nice to meet Rols, Stash, Andy and Selene. And great to hike with Jason again. I still can't believe it was as cold as the thermometer said, it felt warmer than the last two hikes I've been on. And it was not as clear either, so I did take some pictures, but not too many.

    Mt Crescent Trail (12/13/08)

Trail Conditions crusty, with some icy spots and some open brooks. Equipment Required We used snowshoes the whole way. It's still slippery and not well packed. There were branches down in the path. There are a lot less now. I moved most anything that wasn't frozen down. There are a few...

The differences of the Whites verses ADKS

no kidding. I want to know where all these well-graded, non-muddy trails are that everyone keeps talking about!

The differences of the Whites verses ADKS

It's funny that it seems to be mostly ADK people replying. That must mean something, but I have no idea what.

Finished NE4Ks on Saddleback and the Horn! 11-01-08

Indeed it is not that day. I wasn't going to post this, but then you mentioned the foam blowing away and so I had to. I had a great time and was glad to be along as you finished your list. Hope to be there for the next one. I took some pictures too.

    Research for a book

How about the rest area on I-89 northbound near exit 13? The view used to be better before they rebuilt it, but it's still pretty good. Other than Mt Sunapee, I have no idea what anything else is. Another one that is a little outside of what you're looking for would be the overlook on Rt 9 on...

    vose spur

You'd have to be blind to miss the boulder. And even then, you'd probably run into it. The boulder is very obvious and so is the start of the herd path. But the herd path disappears rather quickly. Once you gain the ridgeline, it's pretty easy to find another herd path though, if you're so...

Vermont and Maine 4K hiking maps

The Long Trail Map from the Wilderness Map Company is good enough for the 4k's. Watch out in other places though, it has some really bad errors. The 3rd edition is better than the 2nd. Of course, just the simple maps in the Long Trail Guide are sufficient for the 4k's, I thought. I also...

    VT driving question

don't take either of those routes. take this one instead. exit 3 (Bethel, Royalton) right onto 107 to 12 north left onto camp brook road, turn left at a T-intersection that has a sign pointing to Rochester. then right on 100 and Lincoln Gap will be a left turn just as you're coming into the...

    Mt. Mansfield "nose" question

I read the warning sign, but don't remember exactly what it said. The gist was that it exceeded acceptable values for workplaces. So I would think that the danger would be minimal for a brief visit like ours was. If you worked up there, that would be a different story. Of course, the sign...
