    Allagash question

I'd like to take a shot at an Allagash trip ( maybe next month if I can pull it off). My only big problem is how do I get to the point where me and my kayak are at Chamberlain Lake and my truck is at Allagash Village. I know that my options are 1: Park at Allagash Village and get transport to...

    Brown Recluse Spider

I had an encounter with a brown recluse in North Carolina 20 plus years ago and still have a divot in my arm to show for it. Those things will ruin your whole day.

Short Term Impact of government Shutdown on WMNF

I can't see the contractor that operates the WMNF campgrounds (Pro-Sports,Inc.) turning his back on that revenue right at the start of the busy season. My guess is that the campgrounds will somehow remain open.

Camping in Oakes Gulf, Dry River Trail

I backpacked up in there last summer and there were designated campsites on the Dry River Trail about a mile and a half north of Dry River #3 shelter. The night I was there a backcountry ranger camped there also.Nice spot.

    Mid-State/Wapack Trail Question

Steve-O..., I'm trying to put together a "New England Traverse". The North-South Trail in RI (which goes right by my house) connects to the mid-state in Ma which connects to the Wapack. The two gaps that I have to smooth over are 1: Between Wapack and Monadnock and 2: Between Sunapee and...

    Mid-State/Wapack Trail Question

Is there a trail (or series of trails) that would make a reasonable connection between the Mid-State/Wapack trail and the Monadnock- Sunapee Greenway? I'm just trying to figure a way between the two trails that minimizes road walking.

Five Maine 4Ks – A “rocky” start with a spectacular finish

Great trip report (as usual) Seema. Between Christmas and New Years Day(I think it was the day before the lift failure) Skimom, her friend ,and myself hiked up the ski trails of Sugarloaf. We used the trail that we were told was the "hiker-friendly" trail. We were immediately set upon by a...

Do people avoid the Daniel Webster Scout Trail?

I should have added that I stayed at Barnes Field last weekend. The turn into Dolly Copp CG off of Dolly Copp Rd. was plowed. How far in it may be plowed I have no idea. The Hayes Copp ski trails are between the CG and the Great Gulf trail but I don't know where the skiers park. That is all.

Do people avoid the Daniel Webster Scout Trail?

The one time I hiked it was on the finish of a South to North traverse.Above treeline we had a bunch of trouble staying on track. We even encountered a cairn with a resident Davebear. Below the trees it was a long hike out .As someone else mentioned it's a long hike out when you're ready to be...

    Tubbs Repair?

I have an older pair of Tubbs Sierras. The frame is in good shape but both the deck and binding have issues that are beyond my Jedi skills. I hate to give up on them. Does Tubbs still have customer service or could anyone recommend a repair shop?

    Hancocks Bushwhack - Skidder Questions

A couple years ago I whacked W.Bond from Hellgate ravine. It was moderately thick but every 25 meters of elevation would bring some evidence of a skid road. They're everywhere but I wouldn't count on them for a route. There are several people on this site that have bushwhacked the Jumping Brook...

durability of Tyvek for emergency ?

I use tyvek as a groundcloth for my bivy. It works well in that regard. I can't address your hammock question because...well....tyvek hammock???whatever....What I can contribute is that if you purchase the typical home-wrap type tyvek for outdoor gear use, run it through a cycle in your washing...

Man....It was supposed to be harder than that. You are,of course, correct. I hiked it from the point it diverges from the Lincoln Brook trail to the west side of Franconia Brook roughly across from Camp 10.

    Mystery Hike in the Pemi

Sunday morning I backpacked into the Pemi to do some fishing. An equipment malfunction quickly put an end to the fishing so I had to come up with a plan B. I recalled seeing a railroad grade on an old map and decided to have a look. After a little poking around I scrambled up a hill and was...

    Winter Bivy Thread

I agree with everyone. I use 6 or 7 different bivy's. I'm a huge fan of everything OR . But as the original poster specified winter conditions I mentioned a winter-specific bag. OR is as solid of an outdoor gear manufacturor (Sp?) that there is. If they came up with a winter-specific bag....I...
