Kayaking Narragansett Bay, RI Memorial Day

Hey Warren, Most of the local kayak rental dudes want you to use them "on site", basically you launch right from their facility. There is a tackle shop very close to the campsite that rents kayaks ($35.00 per day) and I believe you can drive them away. It's Quaker Lane Bait and Tackle...

Kayaking Narragansett Bay, RI Memorial Day

Hey Darren, I consulted a book about kayaking the Narr. Bay and it said that there was parking for 6 to 8 cars at that location, so I guess it's legal though I imagine we'd have to get there early to claim a few spots. I have my own sit-on-top which I can use as long as the water...

Kayaking Narragansett Bay, RI Memorial Day

There was room for 8 or 10 cars right off the beach the last time I was there. After work some night this week I'll take a ride by and have a look.

Kayaking Narragansett Bay, RI Memorial Day

There's a small beach at URI's Bay campus (Narragansett,RI) that I used to launch from. It's almost directly west of Fort Getty across the bay. I haven't been there in a few years but,if it's still accessable, it's a great spot.

    backpack and sleeping bag

Hey Ken999, I'm with you. I'm a huge Wiggy's fan but Jerry has a strong personality that seems to put people off and affect his market share (after an ongoing battle he told Backpacker magazine not to review his products anymore).I think he's a riot myself. You have to read his...

    snowshoes or not

This weekend the peaks were basically snow free from Ike to the rockpile. There was still some sloppy stuff in the col between Ike and Pierce and in lower elevations to about 3000feet.

Kayaking Narragansett Bay, RI Memorial Day

Hey Jay, There are several hardened campsites on Dutch Island, but I have no idea if they are legal or not. The rule of thumb in RI is if the cops show up, outrun the politicians and you'll be fine. I'd post a smiley here but I'm not joking.

Kayaking Narragansett Bay, RI Memorial Day

Hey Jay, I might be interested in joining you. Like Darren, I live nearby and won't need to camp but love to paddle. Dutch Island (an uninhabited island covered with military ruins, just off of Ft. Getty) is an excellent paddling and exploring destination.

    Advice on Pack

I recently acquired a Gregory Whitney which I am really liking. I do still keep my old packs and use them (especially the externals) when they're " the right tool for the application". I just checked and I still have a plastic framed external Peak 1 from the early 80's and an aluminum framed...

    Mount Chocorua, February 1974!

Thanks for the pix Turnbill. They're excellent. The gear changes, but the mountains and the smiles stay the same. I have a bunch of old slides that I now may have to scan.

    Cavedog in Backpacker Magazine

In the most recent (May 2004) edition of Backpacker Magazine, there is a several-page-long article concerning the continuing exploits of our own Cavedog. He certainly earned the recognition.

    RI Hill bagging?

Hey Mike, Long time no see. I live in this area and maintain a bunch of local trails, especially around Mt. Tom. PM or email me with any questions you may have and I'd like to come along if I'm available...

    Gps

I'm with MichaelJ A GPS is a fun gizmo, but it's still just a gizmo. My etrex Vista has a barometric altimeter feature that I use way more often than the navigation features. The internal "patch" type antennas just aren't strong enough for use in the mountains, except when...

    Gaiters again

I went through the ice on a stream crossing with my plastic boots earlier this week. Without my gaiters the water would have easily flooded my boot. As it turned out, my socks were still dry. If I wasn't sold on gaiters before, I am now.
