How much do you spend per year in NH subject to rooms and meals tax?

I'll often stop to eat after hiking and probably spend 4 or 5 nights a year in a hotel in the area. I often sleep in the back of my truck but if I'm hiking with my brother or in the area with my wife they require a bit more comfort.

    conditioning for Rainier

Caffine! Not! One of the things I did before going to Rainier was to cut all caffine out of my diet for about 2 weeks before the climb. If you are on the mountain for a few days and don't get your normal caffine fix you can get headaches from the caffine withdrawal. This headache could be...

know of any trails with wider tracks?

I hiked the Hancocks last Tuesday wearing my Tubbs Snowshoes for most of the hike except for the climb up North Hancock. It was easier to climb with crampons. I know what you mean about a narrow trail. I often feel like the outside of my snowshoes is breaking trail!

What does VFTT mean to you?

Thanks! I first joined VFTT for the trail information and to learn about hiking. It has lead to many new and wonderful friends and many great experiences. I've dragged my non-hiking wife and some non-VFTT friends out on hikes with me and they are amazed that I always seem to run into someone...

Kinsmans from Lafayette Place on 1/9/11

Followed the Lonesome Lake, F'n Jimmy and Kinsman Ridge trails. Light snow (2-3 inches) covered the trails and it was snowing lightly for most of the day. No views at all. It was like hiking inside a cotton ball. Bare booted to the Hut and then put on crampons (G10's) which stayed on for the...

climbing crampons; G14's, another G12 or somehing else ?

I've been happy with my Petzl M10's for vertical ice climbing. If I am climbing a gully I may opt for my Grivel G12's if there aren't long steep pitches of ice. G10's are for hiking.

    Waterfalls in Winter

I'd have to agree with Pocohontas. The easy hike to the trestle at the amphitheater of Frankenstein Cliff and the view of the ice falls with many climbers attracts lots of people, not just climbers. More ice climbs and falls as you keep walking along the snow covered tracks.

    Carrauntoohil Ireland (1,038 metres)

Yogi, I'm glad you had the chance to climb Carrauntoohil. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity back in 2004. It's a really fun hike/climb up the "Devil's Ladder". It was one of the highlights of my trip to Ireland!

    Franconia Brook Trail Beaver Ponds

Between the Wilderness Trail and the turn-off to the Lincoln Brook trail there is a large beaver pond/swamp. The trail has been rerouted slightly to the east of this for a short way and was no problem to get around. My brother and I did this part last weekend on our Owl's Head hike. I can't...
