Wapack trail traverse with return by bicycle?

I worked on a Wapack trail crew a few weeks ago through the Windblown ski area. The following week I hiked it from Route 119 in Ashby Ma (over Watatic) to the high hut at Windblown and back. Trail was in good shape.

    Digital SLR suggestions wanted

Brien and DougPaul both offered good advice. Get a camera that feels good in your hands and good lenses will last a lifetime. Dave Metsky also made a good point about getting used to going over your budget. That is soooo true, at least for me. I shoot with a Canon Rebel XSi. I have a...

    Mt. Hood ideas

Near Mount St. Helen is the Ape Cave. It is an interesting lava tube a couple of miles long. Bring a head lamp and a jacket. It's a nice way to spend an afternoon after you've climbed Hood, Adams, or Rainier.

Missing Hiker in Northern Presidentials - Found safe

I guess most of us could use to have our heads examined. The Great Gulf is a nice place for solo hiking and solitude. I just have enough experience to know not to drop down into the Gulf this time of year. I got this experience the same way most of us did. I had my own little epic with...

    Strange litter on Mt. Wachusett

Not mine but I have hiked Wachusett often with a 20 lb sand bag in my pack. It is a good little workout. Someone probably got a little over ambitous.:D

Missing Hiker in Northern Presidentials - Found safe

I think that reporters use the terms "ice pick" and "metal spikes" because they and most of their readers do not know what "ice axe" and "crampon" mean. I'm glad this kid was found. I wonder if he tried to drop down into the Great Gulf and found the traveling too tough and decided to head back...

    Non-hiking deathmarches

Hiking and climbing are my hobbies. For a death day how about leaving the house at 4 am in central Massachusetts, driving 3+ hours to Pinkham Notch, hiking into Huntington Ravine, climbing a gully, hiking across the alpine garden and down Lion Head trail and then driving home again. My wife...

    Unprepared Hikers in the Whites

Bet you found the going pretty steep on this side of JQA! This was one of the first steep unroped climbs my brother and I did. We were using alpine ice axes and plunging them deep! We were training for our Mount Rainier climb at the time. Go back with an ice axe and have some fun...

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

I don't think I get much unsolicited advice. Maybe I do, but I just not paying any attention to what the other person is saying because I am thinking to myself - "Who does this idiot think they are!" Then again, it might be the "&%$@ you" look on my face when they start to open their mouth.

Hikers Ride Avy down Mt. Washington

On a nice spring day with posted Low Avy conditions I would not have hesitated to head into the ravine on a day like that. In fact if it was not Easter weekend and my wife wanted me to stay home, I would have been up there myself. I'll have to thank her for that! Variability Happens! (variable...

    Making the move to digital.

In addition to the size of the memory card, the number of shots you get on a memory card will depend on the megapixals of the camera you are using and the file type you are using to save your images. A Canon G10 is a 14.7 effective magapixel sensor. With a 2GB memory card you will be able to...

Baxter: Chimney Route, Knife Edge, Baxter, Hamlin Ridge

WAY TO TEASE ME WITH THOSE PICTURES!!:p I am definately going back to Baxter next year. While you guys were climbing the Chimney I was playing golf in Arizona. Golf was fun but certainly not nearly as fun as climbing the Chimney would have been! Put me on the list for next year - Use a pen!

    Superfeet?

I've been using Superfeet insoles for several years now. I have the green ones in my Bean Cresta hikers and the orange ones in my insulated leathers. I swear by them, but I have not used the Soles. As recommended a couple of short hikes to break in any insole is a good idea. Try'em on a...

    My First Adirondak Adventures!

I was kicking myself for bailing on the trip a couple of weeks ago with Leaf. After reading this report I had to kick myself again. I've got to get out to the DAKS! Thanks for sharing the pix.

    Guyot shelter -- mice..?

As Dr. Wu mentioned staying at shelters can be fun when you have a good group of people. Besides Guyot I have stayed in the Hermit Lake shelters several times. The mice are not a problem if you keep your food and trash picked up. Generally the other people in the shelters are easy to get...
