WMNF Alerts & Notices – Read 'em or weep

Not quite getting your post, Stan. Are you saying that unattractive people, if spotted taking a quick nude dip at some remote swimming hole ( In November ???), deserve to be shot? And does that mean if you are good looking , you won't get shot? Can you flesh that out a bit?

WMNF Alerts & Notices – Read 'em or weep

Some laws are meant to be ignored - this would be one of them. I'll take my chances, and would be more than happy to show up in court in the unlikely situation that I would be hassled while nekkid' in the backcountry. Screw 'em.

Random thoughts on being prepared... or not...

Yes - I was referring to a stand-by type setup.

Random thoughts on being prepared... or not...

I would have preferred the longevity and heavy-duty ability of a diesel standby unit, but if I remember right, it would have been at least 5k+ installed myself. The used US military units are bombpoof, but generally have to be done as custom installs if you want to use them as a stand-by unit.

Random thoughts on being prepared... or not...

Living out in the sticks on a back road in VT and having had enough of power outages, I installed a standby-type propane generator 2 years ago ( we already had propane for our heating system). It's A Generac 10K unit from Home Depot. It's come to the rescue several times, most notably during...

Universal Sticky Anti-Bot Material by Stubai

I stumbled across this product by Stubai, a "universal" anti-stick material that can be adapted to any crampon - something that might also have applications in hot-rodding snowshoe crampons, etc. I am going to order a set to see if I can make something better than the skimpy ones that are...

    Crampons for Non Rigid Boots

Yup. Pretty much all I ever carry unless conditions are super-duper icy. The front points are much less prominent than the G-10s, as well as having shorter points all around. They also are much more compact to carry and weigh 6 ounces less. One thing that I think they could improve is the...

    Baxter State Park news

Nice to see Baxter evolving away from it's heavy-handed policies of the past. Here's a big thank you to all the people who have pressured the park in this direction ( people who may or may not have been referred to as "whiners" by regulation lovers of all stripes.) They have come a long way...

Foliage in Northern Presis at peak of past peak 10/5/12

The colors along the Kanc are/were fantastic on Friday, although I didn't get to shoot long before the haze and clouds moved in again. A super-frustrating year so far given the amazing colors and seemingly few opportunities to shoot. A lot of areas have moved into the later gold/yellow stage...

More carbon monoxide when pot is on stove?

Yup This is something very important to remember when melting snow for water - to add small pieces of ice/snow at a time so as to not chill the pot and induce CO production. I remember a similar incident on Denali back in the 80's. EDIT: Slew of more info at Zen Stoves

Vermont native attempts record run on Long Trail

Here's to hoping that Nikki is able to finish and set a new record! I suspect the size of the support and production team required the event to start on a fixed date, which is always a huge gamble with the weather dice - especially on the Long Trail, where wet conditions can drastically cut...

    NH 48 speed record

Epic Heat An amazing effort by Ryan and his team, especially in such punishing heat, much worse than anything I remember from the 2003 trip. Just watching Ryan's team over the past few days really reminded me of just how difficult and enormous this project is to take on. Insane, some might say...

    NH 48 speed record

Looking Good Looks like Ryan hit Jackson at 6:34 pm ( or 6:14?), so he should make the road by 7:15 pm or so. Great pace, right on schedule! Anyone interested at looking at the "Splits From Way Back When" can check these ancient scrolls. The events aren't all identical: 2002 (Cave Dog) 2003

    NH 48 speed record

Speaking of rules, I thought that it was clearly specified in Section 8.3c, page 21, sub-section B, that no cushy RV's were allowed and furthermore, a nursing six month old infant must be in the vehicle at all times? What about THAT? Seriously, this is very exciting to see somebody finally...
