New Favorite Toy in My Toybox: Karhu Army Skis + Fritschi AT Bindings = Permagrin

I received my ski's today. :) It looks like the same skis and bindings (FT88) that Mirabela posted a picture of. They've seen some use but overall are in good shape. They also came with climbing skins which are in very good condition. Chip, thanks for the advice. I'm not looking to do...

New Favorite Toy in My Toybox: Karhu Army Skis + Fritschi AT Bindings = Permagrin

I ordered a set of used Swiss army skis from the Sportsmanguide for $40 delivered. The price includes used ski's, bindings, skins and poles. I don't know anything about skiing but for that price I figured I couldn't go wrong. I haven't received them yet so I can't talk about condition (not...

    Hardshell Jacket Suggestions

I just got back from Wild Things in North Conway. They're having sale on most of their stuff. Now is the time to buy eVent shells. I think they were going for about $120.

    Hardshell Jacket Suggestions

I just picked up a MH Transition jacket from Sierra Trading Post. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet but I really like the MH Transition Zip T that I have. The jacket looks even better with a hood and full zipper. I tend to perspire heavily and find the Transition N2S fabric to be...

An excellent not finishing the 48 Trip Report. My wife and I enjoyed it throughly. Are you going to take another crack at it this year?

I feel your frustration. I was invited to accompany a group in an attempt on Whitney and Shasta. Both times I was turned back by altitude sickness. They both remain on my "to do" list. Next time, I'm going to spent days acclimating instead of a few hours. We went in early June up Alvalanche...

    "Ice Traction Slip-Ons" vs Micro-Spikes

I actually bought a similar pair for about $20. My only complaint was that the "one size fits all" is more like a Men's Medium. Much too small for my 11 1/2 foot. They look exactly like the Hillsound Trail Crampon. http://www.hillsound.com/ I prefer the design over the microspikes.

Get Ready to Get Dirty -Trailwrights on the North Twin Trail

Thanks for the nice comments. It's nice to look back at the end of the day and realize that the rocks we placed will probably be there until the next ice age. At the end of our trip, we didn't completely finish putting in steps on the section of trail we were working. I went up the...

I did that loop last year in the same direction. I'm going to try and fit it in this year too. I never thought the strech between So Twin and Zealand would end. Fire Wardens was quick.

Get Ready to Get Dirty -Trailwrights on the North Twin Trail

Hal Graham suggested to me that we make a Trailwrights work trip on my and MtnDaves adopted trail, the North Twin Trail. That was like having Bill Belichick offering to coach your Pop Warner team. I quickly took him up on his offer. The only thing left to do was to scope the project, pick a...

    N.Twin Trail maintenance Aug.28th.

I don't have all the facts, but I understand that a reroute of a trail is a considerable undertaking which requires several impact studies. I can't see the FS committing the resources to a relo. They barely have the resources to perfrom basic maintenance on many trails. I would like to see...

    N.Twin Trail maintenance Aug.28th.

As Hal said, we have plans to work on the section of the North Twin Trail between the 2nd and 3rd water crossings. This area is 1.3 to 1.5 miles from the trailhead and follows an old railroad grade for most of the distance. This is an area which features several reroutes off the old grade...
