Nice report John. It was nice meeting you. Thanks for posting a picture of me actually doing something. :) It was a fun day.....the sights weren't bad either. :D Glenn

2010: year of the deer fly?

I used one while doing trailwork yesterday. There were a few Black Flies swarming around my face when I sat down for lunch. A couple passes of the Job Lot Bug Zapper racket and they were toast (smelled like burnt toast). I found it satisying in a strange way esp. after the torture...

Thanks, that was me. I cleared water bars to the summit on Friday. There seems to more and more each year. The hike over the Wildcats the next day almost did me in. Next up...a whole lot of brushing.

Fourth Annual Daniel Doan Trail Maintenance Day

Another excellent outing with the trailwrights. Driving up 93N in the pouring rain, I had my doubts. However, by the time I got to the trailhead the weather cleared and we had a great day. :) Anyone interested in trailwork should make it a point to participate in one of the Trailwright's...

    I need a good hat

I use a hat made by Everest Designs. I bought it at the Highland Center. It's very warm but when it gets wet, it smells like farm animals. :( It looks like this...

Stepping Between the Seasons -- North Twin Mountain (14-Oct-2009)

Was that Bob and Geri's group? I saw them at the trail head. I had other plans for the day. We made an end of season trip to clear water bars and blowdowns. Regarding the bypass.....I usually find it to be easier to cross and hike the trail. The footing and grades are so much better on the...

Stepping Between the Seasons -- North Twin Mountain (14-Oct-2009)

Nice Trip Report and Pic's. I hiked No. Twin on Saturday, October 17th. We had a very different day than you. Temp's were comfortable with no wind. Here's a couple pic's from the first outlook of the views you missed. You'll have to go back...

    Who does trail work?

Here's a link to the AMC's orphaned trail page: http://www.outdoors.org/conservation/trails/volunteer/adopt/adopt-orphan-trails.cfm I don't think the USFS has a similar page. Send Giff a PM for info on the USFS trails that need help.

    Who does trail work?

Was that the AMC Adopt a Trail site? The USFS also has an adopt a trail program. Contact Giff on VFTT. He helps to coordinate the USFS program. The last time I was on it (recently), the Skook needed an adopter. Earlier this year, I adopted the No. Twin Trail. So there's definitely...

Trailwrights - Mt. Pemigewassett trail work 09/19/2009

I had a great day in the dirt. If you've never had the chance to get out, you don't know what you're missing. It's like being a kid again. I will never look at rock steps the same way. Thanks to Hal and the Trailwrights for organizing the trip and all the work they do to protect the...

    Pemi Wilderness Bridge Removal Project

The cynic in me tells me this is more about money than philosophy. The government’s fiscal year ends on September 30th. At year end, there is a mad rush in government agencies to spend their budget. They have really packaged the whole thing very nicely. They do less and you get more. For...

    Trailwrights Work Trip -September 19th

I was just looking at the Trailwrights web site. They have added a work trip for September 19th. This is a great opportunity for anyone who needs a Trailwright work outing for the TW72 list. They are planning on adding rock steps and water bars to the Mt. Pemigewasset Trail in Franconia Notch...

    Pesky Rash

My Mom and Dad used to call it "Prickly Heat." I think it's also called Miliaria. Goggle it and you'll find pictures similar to yours. Hot and humid weather seem to be the culprits. Bring on the snow.

AMC White Mountain Guide Online - Accurate Coordinates?

I just looked at a saved track we took one winter using Garmin's Mapsource software. It shows the start of the slide at about N44 08.241 W71 36.954. It was winter with a lot of snow on the ground so the entry to the slide may be a little off. Are you using the same Datum? Mine is using WGS 84

water crossings on North Twin Trail

Here's a link to a picture of the first crossing on the North Twin Trail. It's easy to see why most people bypass this crossing in times of high water. This picture was not taken recently. On another note, the brush in the upper reaches of the trail is pretty thick. You'll want to...

Rangeley / Stratton weekend August 14-16

When I hiked in that area, I stayed at the Mountain View Motel. http://www.mountainviewmotelmaine.com/index.htm It was clean, reasonably priced and minutes from Caribou Valley Road. It's not the Marriott Copley, but I'd stay there again. Glenn

    Chainsaw safety training course?

I recently adopted a trail with the US Forest Service. In the training they gave, they mentioned there was a 3 day training course available for chainsaw certification. At this point in my life, that's bit too much time for me but it might be worth looking into. If anyone is interested...
