    Washington Via the Ammo 12/22/07

Really nice pictures. I was in the group that caught up to you just below the hut. We were truly blessed to be above treeline on a day like that. It was nice seeing Rols again and to have lunch with you and your group. Thanks again for breaking trail. As we made our way up Monroe, we...

    Schoeller cloth garments

I have a pair of EMS pants made out of Schoeller Dryskin. They are my top choice for most winter conditions. I have found that the are not adequate for above treeline travel. The wind will penetrate the fabric leaving you very uncomfortable in places you do not want to be uncomfortable in...

How do You Treat your Water?

I usually carry all the water I will need on a day hike. Typically that's 3 liters. I will also finish a liter before I leave the trail head. I'd hate to start out dehydrated. On longer hikes, I carry a Katadyn Exstream filter bottle. It doesn't weigh much more than a Nalgene bottle and is...

    Water Available on Katahdin?

Caribou Spring had enough water to filter when I was there on September 7th. I didn't go to the the Saddle Spring.

Moose Falls Tent Platforms Bigelows? Mileage?

I have the Maine Mountain Guide 8th edition. There are no specific distances listed to the campsite. The mileage on the Firewardens Trail is 4.6 to the Bigelow Col. Judging from the map it looks like the Moose Falls site is about 3.6 miles from the trailhead. The last mile to the col climbs...

    Mooseland Grill Burned Down

Word on the street in Twin Mountain is that the new owners are planning to build a new restaurant on the site. The planned name for the new establishment? Mooseland Grill of course. :) I heard this from one of the store owners in town. Can't confirm it's for real. GlennS

    The Bonds?

I know one group is going North to South...not sure about the other.

    The Bonds?

It's broken out to at least Zealand. I know of at least 2 groups doing a Bond traverse on Saturday. There should be lots of help breaking trail. Just don't expect a lot of solitude. :) Hope to see you on the Bonds. Glenn

Record Cold all across New England

The snow depth at Zealand hut is 42 inches according to the AMC website. I recall the snow pack in 2005 was deeper. I remember on a hike from East Osceola to Osceola, the blazes were just above the top of the snowpack and I was were walking on top of the snow through uncleared tree branches...

    Conditions to Mount Hale?

I was on the Hale trip with Rols on the 17th. We had no problems summiting. Someone had gone before us and broken trail. It wasn't consolidated at all and even with snowshoes, we sank quite a bit. On Saturday, the snow was soft but there was a definite trough. The top level of snow was...

    The Trail is Now Packed

Cath, I have to take issue with something in your post. I've seen you "break" trail. It was more like you floated over it. As I recall we said you were denting trail. When you top out over 200 lbs, then you can say you were "breaking" trail. I think DougPaul nailed it when he mentioned...

    Crampons suggestions?

With any crampon and snowshoe binding, it helps if you become proficient at putting them on and taking them off. It can be frustrating when a member of your group doesn't know how to quickly put their crampons on. I've found the best place to become proficient is in the comfort of my house...

Search under way as 3 fall from Mt. Hood

I just saw something on TV. Apparently three climbers, 1 man, 2 women and a dog are still up there. The climbers are equipped with 2 sleeping bags, a tarp and perhaps most important an Emergency Locator Beacon. The conditions are keeping SAR from accessing them. Accordingly to searchers it's...

Is it me or my snowshoes??

I was cursing Tubbs on Saturday. I had a problem with my Tubbs Mountains on my hike up Stony Brook to Moriah. Just as I reached the Carter Moriah trail junction, both bindings failed. One of them to the point where it completely separated the snowshoe from binding. Too much damn...

    WMNF Campgrounds in Winter?

I know that the Hancock campground is open year round. It's plowed in winter so it's considered full service. The normal rates are charged. Hancock is the campground on the Kanc just before Lincoln Woods. Have fun.

    Winter hiking in Maine

I also recommend the Mountainview Motel. I thought it was an incredible value for $45 a night. Their number is (207) 246-2033.

    Creating views with a chainsaw

I get the impression that the Maine ATC doesn't mind cutting a few trees. I recall cuts on Spaulding, Crocker and Old Speck. I'm not in favor of making the Whites look like the Scottish Highlands but I don't see any thing wrong with maintaining an existing view.

    Lincoln Trail/ Kearsarge South

The Lincoln Trail starts on Kearsarge Valley Road. The parking area is on the right (east) side of the road as you are traveling to Winslow State Park. It is before the golf course which would be on the opposite side of the road. Send me a PM if you want a Topo I created from a GPS track

    Lincoln Trail/ Kearsarge South

I love hiking Mt Kearsarge. My favorite hike is to drive up the auto road to the parking lot. Pick up the Lincoln Trail at the left side of the parking lot and take it to the summit, take the Barlow Trail down to the other parking lot and the Wilmot Trail back up to the summit. It can gve you...
