Sounds like you guys had fun; sorry I missed it. When is the next trip planned?

To tired to enjoy the views?

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is caloric intake. Between the heavier packs, cold temps and longer approaches, winter hiking burns an incredible amount of calories. When the blood sugar levels are low, performance takes a huge hit. On one winter trip, our group was heading from Madison...

    Camping atop Mount Kearsarge

I met a Ranger on one trip who said that they considered the fire tower to be a shelter and that they had no objections to people overnighting there. I've thought of overnighting there myself; sunrises would be spectacular from there. The tower is fully enclosed and I recall that its about 12'...

Camera ideas for Hiking / Outdoors / General use

I have a Nikon Coolpix 8700 and a Pentax Optio S40. The Pentax isn't in the same league as the Nikon, it shouldn't be for the price difference, but still delivers acceptable results. I bought the Pentax because I wasn't happy with the cold weather performance of the Nikon. I found that the...

    Shovels as Winter Gear

Last year about this time, I attended a presentation given by Joe Lentini, Director of the EMS Climbing School. He went over gear he considered essential for above treeline travel. One of the items was a shovel; both for avalanche rescue and for creating a shelter in bad conditions. He used...

    Boiling bags.

I've scrambled eggs and even made a Peach Cobbler in zip lock freezer bags without any probelms. I can't imagine the reason for the caution; probably a product liability issue. OTOH, I hope it didn't leach toxic chemicals into my peaches.

    Bonds Traverse Nov 19/20 2005

Awesome job Andrew! I swear that your pack looked heavier (and bigger) with each step upward. I was impressed that you could carry that thing at all. We'll have too try it again in Winter. This time, I'll take point and get the brunt of the snow white washes.

    Favorite handsaw.

I picked up a 10 inch folding Fiskars saw at Home Depot for $14. It only cuts on the pull stroke. That took a bit of getting used to but it keeps the saw from binding. I've only used it on one trip but it seemed to fit the bill quite nicely.

North Pack via Ted & Carolyn

While we're on the subject of the Cliff Trail on North Pack....What's up with that massive cairn just off the trail below the cliffs? Does it have some meaning or is it a just a monument to useless cairn building?

    Lunch ideas for winter hikes

I'll snack on Power Bars. I keep them in my cozy with my hot gatorade. By the time I take them out, they're kind of gooey.

    Veteran's Day hike 11/11

I was planning on heading up at 8:00 but a half hour earlier or later works OK. Going over the Monroe's works for me. I'd rather go up Edmands and down Ammo. That means meeting first at either the Ammo TH or cog parking lot for a car spot. Let me know which.

    Veteran's Day hike 11/11

I'm up for a hike. I'm getting over a bout of Bronchitis so a leisurely paced hike sounds great. I was planning on Franklin and Eisenhower via the Edmands path. I have 50 peaks left on my list but I'm not religous about it. I'm open for just about anything. Glenn

    Summit Rituals/Traditions ?

I used to take my boots off to let my dogs breathe when I got to the summit. That stopped when I broke my toe on the summit of South Baldface. The six miles out was slow and painful. Now I do something safer like get my list out and tick off a peak. ;)

    Fixing Petzl Tikka..

Apparently, the lens on the Tikka's get lost frequently. My son lost the plastic lens on his Tikka. He bought a replacement at EMS. Try the following link...

    Hydration systems & winter hiking

I usually carry hot Gatorade in the Nalgene bottles in winter. It's not as gross as it sounds. :D Does anyone have any idea as to how much the sodium in the Gatorade lowers the freezing point? I'm assuming it's less than 32 degrees but chemistry never was my best subject. :o

    Lasik (lasic) surgery and hiking?

I had LASEK on my left eye in June. I'm still wearing a contact lens in my right eye. So far, I'm very pleased with my results. Prior to my surgery, I had some very large numbers in terms of my prescription. I was at -7.5 diopters with moderate astigmatism (that's my "good" eye). Post...

    Mt. Monadnock

I'm with Kerry on this one. I love the Spellman and Pumpelly trail. If you want to make the hike a little longer, you can pass on the Spellman and follow the Cascade Link to the Pumpelly. If the summit is a mob scene, don't go any further than the Red Spot intersection. Then take the Red...

    Cannon and (unsuccessful) Kinsmans, 9/28/05

I made the mistake of taking my 95 pound German Shepherd up that trail. I had to lift him up and over boulders more times than I cared to remember. To make matters worse, I took him down the Hi Cannon trail. He didn't like the section with the ladder very much. :o

    Odd pets on trails

I once saw a man walking a goat up Mt. Major. He was with a boy in a Batman outfit. That was the most unique I've seen yet.

    Hking by myself

This is about having fun. If you're not comfortable soloing, then why do it? I love to solo hike but it isn't for everyone. Join the AMC. In each months magazine, there is an extensive listing of hikes for all levels of experience and abilities. The hikes are lead by experienced leaders and...
