Is there a quailty map of the Maine 4k mountain area around Flagstaff Lake avaialble?

I'll second this recommendation. It's a great map, and it includes Tumbledown as well as bike routes, paddling areas, and lots of less popular trails that I probably wouldn't have heard of otherwise.

Proposal to change management for Maine public reserve lands to primarily Forestry

Thanks for the link, peakbagger. Most importantly, do you think we concerned citizens can have an impact at all by flooding our local politicians' phone lines and email inboxes? If so, I think it's time to get on that. About the heli skiing, please start another thread with that. It has nothing...

    Tumbledown Winter Parking

Does anyone know what the parking is like, if any, for the Byron-Weld Road (on the Weld side) this time of year? I've been thinking of heading into Tumbledown Mountain while there's still plenty of snow, but I have no firsthand knowledge of the area in winter. I know the road is a snowmobile...

How to Retrieve a Through Hiker from Baxter

Haha. Ever since I learned to pronounce and spell it, I do both as often as I can ;-)

How to Retrieve a Through Hiker from Baxter

Peakbagger says it all! I would just reiterate one point about reserving a campsite, and add one. First, do call the park office– they are very helpful, especially for first-timers who haven't used the reservation system before. Second, I've had great luck with last minute reservations at...

Steepest sections of the AT & PCT

I'm not trying to be argumentative, either. Just trying to give a different perspective. I think everyone on the internet sounds like they're being argumentative in general, which is why this is the only forum I ever post in anymore-- people are generally better here ;-) As far as the NYNJTC...

Steepest sections of the AT & PCT

Ooh, okay. I must have missed that. So when the maintainers said hikers complained about the steep trails, did they say "hikers" or "through-hikers"? Either way, I'd still probably want to hear it from the maintainer's boss (or whoever made the call to change the location) before I believed it...

Steepest sections of the AT & PCT

I'm just using my experience at the Green Mountain Club for my responses here, so the individual maintainers for other organizations may have different views, but this is what I see in these examples: Bear Mountain sees *maybe* 1500 through-hikers a year, but can easily get that many day-hikers...

Steepest sections of the AT & PCT

Heheh. I've been pretty amused by the reaction to that post so far. I thought I'd get a few "lols" from it, but I guess it's generating more discussion than I would have guessed. For a the original post with a lot more detail on the AT, here's the longer list from Whiteblaze. I'm sure some folks...

"Wild" - Pacific Crest Trail movie

Maine Calling, on MPBN, had a discussion of the book on Dec 24 that I thought was really well done. I haven't read the book or seen the movie (neither really interest me, because I'm not into memoirs), but I think the discussion hit a lot of good points. My friend, Tom Jamrog, was one of the...

Blueberry Ridge & Bickford Brook Trails (Evan's Notch) 12/21/14

Trail Conditions: Alternating mud and ice to around 1500'. Sheer ice on Blueberry Ridge trail below Blueberry Mtn. Hard packed, crusty snow on Blueberry Ridge. Starting just south of Ames Mtn, ice-coated trees blocked much of the trail. Much worse blockage and blowdowns on Bickford Brook trail...

    Garmin Basecamp update installation problems

TomK, I share your frustration with Garmin's BaseCamp tech support-- I'm pretty sure they just have a bunch of monkeys working there. I have the Mac version, and with almost every update there is some huge bug that causes lots of trouble. The most recent one corrupted all of my GPX files and I...

    Three things about Baxter Park

I can entirely understand the disappointment in being turned away, but whether you're a peak bagger or not you need to know what you're getting into wherever you go hiking. If you know ahead of time about the rules, you can plan for the eventuality of the peak being closed. And then maybe you'll...

    Three things about Baxter Park

I've heard similar stories about the park from the 70's and 80's, and I'm going to assume that the rules must have been relaxed a bit since then. The only hoop I had to jump through for a week-long backpacking trip there this summer, and then another three-day trip in September, was calling the...

    Three things about Baxter Park

Sierra, take a quick gander at the open letter, specifically pages 3-5. Pets are not allowed in Baxter State Park, but many through-hikers have been sneaking their dogs into the park, sometimes displaying counterfeit service animal credentials. What makes my blood boil is when someone blatantly...

    Three things about Baxter Park

I am very glad to hear the park isn't taking all of this laying down. I saw a picture of a through hiker on Baxter Peak with a dog this autumn, and it just about made my blood boil. There's not a lot of regulation on the AT, and you can easily see how the trail is being "loved to death". I'd...

Hikers Discover The Shocking Truth About November In The Mountains

Yeah, and let's face it-- shoulder season has a strong effect like this, since Boston and Portland can be significantly warmer and less snowy than the mountains. I'll admit to doing something like this every single October or November since 2007, heading for a hike where I'm sure there's no more...

Help with Trail Maps for GPS

I'll put in a vote for the GPSFileDepot maps. I've been using them on my garmin etrex for four years, and I have no complaints. I've never tried garmin's paid maps because the free maps are good enough that I can't justify spending a large amount of cash on something that doesn't need...

What's your favorite GPS app for iPhone 5?

I don't know Backpacker's app, but in Gaia and many other GPS apps, using Open Street Map's cycle or terrain maps has a better chance of showing recent reroutes of trails, since the map data is a huge open source project. Do any of you in this discussion have any experience with Chimani's...
