Darn Tough Annual Factory Sale - this weekend and next weekend

I went to this sale when I lived in VT a few years back, and loaded up on so many Darn Tough and other types of socks that I still have about ten pairs still in their packaging. They do indeed last a heck of a long time! And that factory sale is a rockin deal. Wish I could make it up there this...

AT in a single calendar winter

In 2007 I met a whole lot of southbounders in February who were finishing their wintery hikes. But more interestingly, I followed the register entries of a northbounder who had started in October and hit katahdin in early June. It wasn't all in winter, but it was pretty mind blowing anyway. If...

    Coddling Hollow Road status

There were a handful of cars there when I hiked through in July, and none that looked like off-reading vehicles, so my guess is it's fine. Good hike, too! The cliffs below Laraway Lookout are pretty spectacular.

    Any Grafton Loopers this weekend?

I'll be far away this weekend, but enjoy the heck out of that trail! It's one of my favorites for a nice, rugged weekend backpacking trip. I'll find a time to get out on the trail with you again sometime soon :-)

    Vermont maps recommendations?

Another vote for the Green Mountain Club's maps. They're top notch, and since they're published by the GMC, the money spent on them goes right back to the trails through their programs. I've been using the third edition of the waterproof LT map since 2008, and it's still holding together quite well!

Vermont native attempts record run on Long Trail

I doubt it would do much. The Mahoosucs, like the Whites and most of the mountains in Maine, have a nice, rough granite surface. The problem in VT is really just how smooth and slick the rocks get.

Vermont native attempts record run on Long Trail

Oh, that must have been my friend, Clint. I was over CH on the 22nd or 23rd, I think. Somewhere around there. It was the rainiest day of the hike... Got into Bamforth Ridge shelter literally seconds before one of the most tremendous thunderstorms I've ever been in :-) that's a mighty fine...

Vermont native attempts record run on Long Trail

bummer about your foot! I hope it heals quickly now that you're off trail for a while. I agree wholeheartedly about the wet rocks in VT. The best reason I know is because the mountains there are less granite and more schist, so I guess a smoother surface. I had rain coming over Camel's Hump...

    Appalachian Trail: Rangeley To Stratton, ME- 8 4K's 7/5/12 - 7/8/12

This sure brings back memories... That section was my first solo backpacking trip, and my first time hanging out with through-hiker bums. I really need to get back up there! Thanks for the fine pics and report.

    LT rides and car options

Thanks, Unstrung Harp. Karma is always a good thing to get ahead with ;) Brambor, I'll let you know when I find out more. I think I'll be leaving my car at the North Troy Inn-- I called them, and they say they can't do car storage unless you stay at least one night at the inn (not bad...

    LT rides and car options

Okay, I emailed the Club's info line and they have a very extensive Trail Angels ride list, organized by section, that they send out by request. I should have known that already, since I worked in that office for a year :o I haven't called anyone yet, but I think I'm going to start in the...

    LT rides and car options

Tomcat, thanks for the lead. I will give the North Troy folks a call soon and see about that option. Hitch hiking is fine for me-- the biggest problem is usually when I need to be in a certain place at a certain time. Hopefully I won't be so rushed, though. Brambor, also a good idea. I may not...

    LT rides and car options

Hey everyone. Long time no see... My plans for the summer have changed a bit and I'm back in New England for a little while. I'm trying to throw together a last minute plan to hike the Long Trail starting sometime around July 16. The only big problem is that I'll be driving from Maine and don't...

    AT - Mt Wash

Google's track for the AT is wrong in a lot of places (same with the PCT). I wonder where they get their info from. I noticed the other day that at Stratton Pond in VT, they've got the AT/LT coming from the southwest (what is actually the Stratton Pond Trail) rather than from the east from...

    Camden Hills iPhone app

Hey everybody. Just thought I'd mention this again-- I've been making some iPhone based trail guide apps, and now that I've got the Pacific Crest Trail guides done, I'm focusing on places more near and dear to me. One for the Camden Hills in Maine just went on the app store today. That's all...

    Sunapee & Pillsbury parking

I just went to Pillsbury today and parked before the gate. When I got back to my car, there was another car in front of mine, and a maintenance crew that was working in the park was totally okay with it. Good enough for me! I'll call the resort about parking there for the MSG hike. That sounds...

    Sunapee & Pillsbury parking

Sounds good to me! Thanks you two. Anyone know if the Andrew's Brook Trail is okay for parking at for a weekend? It's more of a gravel shoulder not far from a few houses, but it seems like a nicer trail than the one from the ski resort.

    Sunapee & Pillsbury parking

I've tried calling Sunapee and Pillsbury State Parks with these questions, but no one's answering. I guess it's too early in the season for them to be staffed. Does anyone know about parking for these two places? In particular: 1. Pillsbury Park is gated right now, but there's a pretty large...

    cohos/northern nh trail maps?

That's pretty exciting news. Kim is a heck of a writer, and I can only imagine the fifty hikes in that book will be mind-blowing. Natron, if you don't mind a point-to-point backpacking trip, you can get shuttles from Cohos Trail Association folks (try the Stark Village Inn for a ride), but go...

    Monadnock via Dublin Trail 4/3/12

Road to Dublin Trail parking from 101 says "road closed ahead" but the parking area is open and accessible. The dirt road has some deep ruts, but is dry and my Maxima made it in without a problem. Trail conditions were nice. Ground is mostly frozen, with only a few patches of easily avoidable...
