I agree with you on that count. Vermont definitely gets it right in how it treats natural beauty as a valuable commodity. I've always thought this is partly because it's much easier to get to VT than ME from the large population centers of the east coast, though, and the money from all those New...

Heading out for 4 days in April

Hey Chaco. This might not be what you're looking for, but I'm trying to get a little group together to do the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway that same weekend. Hike up Sunapee and camp either at Lake Solitude or Moose Lookout Shelter friday night, then 50 miles between saturday and sunday. Ought to...

    New Services on Mt Washington

As I read through it, I thought "this has got to be a joke..." and then I realized what you meant. hehehe. I need a calendar.

    grafton notch loop?

The campsites on west side (maintained by AMC) have bear boxes, if I remember right. The campsites on the east side (MATC) had all had the doors removed from the privies the last time I was through there last year-- no idea why, although since it was literally every privy, I thought maybe it was...

    grafton notch loop?

That's going to be a mighty rugged two days, but if you're in good shape, it's possible. I think all of the campsites on the GLT are great except for Stewart (the one just on the north side of Puzzle Mountain). Considering you're trying to do this in one night, though, you'll most definitely...

That map is frustratingly tiny and undetailed, but it looks kind of like the proposed route is a little south of the 100 Mile Wilderness. I haven't been following this at all, but how much would such a route help Maine's economy? Or is it some kind of hare-brained scheme like the Plum Creek...

    Snow-free trails. Spring 2012 edition.

Has anyone been to Sunapee or Pillsbury State Park? I'm hoping to check that out soon, although if Cardigan is snow-free, I'd imagine Sunapee is, too. Also, how bad is the mud out there? I'm guessing Vermont is in the usual mud-season lockdown for now, but I don't hear much about that for NH.

Winter is over, what did y'all do

That's almost exactly what happened to my girlfriend. Nice, shiny, new pair of Tubbs Flex Alps, and they still look brand new. Got to use them for a total of maybe 6 miles this winter. Good thing they don't go bad sitting on the shelf.

Winter is over, what did y'all do

Wow, I feel like a slacker. I bagged two peaks, plus two that I hadn't been to in winter. Mostly sat at my computer for the entire winter, but... let's see if I can put together a little list.... Started out nicely with huge snow in late October (I know it doesn't count as winter, really, but...

PeakFinder App for iPhone and Android

Good find. I think I've seen this before, but I never thought to try it out. Maybe I'll splurge soon and give it a shot sometime. I wonder how it works... if it somehow uses topo maps, it should work pretty much anywhere, right? It would be interesting to see if it worked on relatively out of...

    Liberty & Flume 3/15

The Only Thing Better Than a Presi Day is.....

I was looking right over at you from Liberty... with the pea-soup fog and rain in the parking lot, I was not expecting anything so amazing up top. Glad I didn't decide to sit inside that day, and very glad someone got pictures to do the day justice. Party on!

Where to go near Franconia Notch this weekend

I guess I'll plan on snow up high and bare ground at the bottom and just carry everything I can. Even if the trails are slushy, I'll hold out for good views and fresh air :)

Where to go near Franconia Notch this weekend

Exactly what I was thinking. I like the idea of the Osseo Trail. I was thinking of the Flume & Liberty Loop, but thought it might be a bit dicey in winter/spring conditions. Any thoughts on Cannon?

Where to go near Franconia Notch this weekend

My girlfriend and I are planning on heading up to Lincoln this weekend for two days and trying to get some final snowshoeing in for the winter. I'm guessing the Franconia Notch area is a little less summery right now than southern NH, judging by trailsnh.com. Can anyone give me some suggestions...

    Guthook's iPhone Apps

Well, I don't know if I would buy a phone just for one app, but do as you will ;) I actually wanted to get the iphone for whenever I do another long distance hike. The amount of time I wasted in trying to find internet access in towns on my PCT hike was pretty stupid. And the town guides for...

    Guthook's iPhone Apps

Thanks Marnof. I'm actually much more excited about the New England areas, since they are what I had in mind when I first started this project. I'll be sure to let you and the rest of the world know when they're ready :)

    Guthook's iPhone Apps

Hey everybody, I thought I'd mention this here, although it's of limited appeal so far... I've been working in semi-secret for the past year on making a set of iPhone-based hiking guides, and the first of (hopefully) many was released yesterday. Right now I'm focusing on the Pacific Crest Trail...
