New Hampshire man charged with burning Vermont hiking shelter

Haha. Agreed there. Although I wouldn't excuse him even if it was an accident that he lied about out of embarrassment. Just like if you bang up someone's car and leave without a note, burning down a shelter and not reporting the incident to the authorities immediately (especially if it's an...

New Hampshire man charged with burning Vermont hiking shelter

I would hope so as well. I'd forgotten about Tucker Johnson Shelter, and when I saw the thread title I thought it was in reference to the Lost Pond Shelter. I guess they still haven't found that repeat offender.

A Freezing Frosty good time on Isolation for a 48 Finish!

Sounds like a great time! Congrats to Kate on the 48 finish, and to Petch on his first moose :) Who had the bright yellow jumpsuit? Very stylish!

GPS - developing you map skills as well

Good read. Reminds me of when I moved to Portland last year (and Keene this year)-- one of my friends told me to just go out driving without any form of navigation and just hope I'd show up where I was trying to go. Because getting lost is the best way to acquaint yourself with a new town. It...

    A winter Long Trail attempt?

There were two Maine AMC leaders who put on a presentation last year about hiking the Maine AT in winter. It was as a series of weekend backpacking trips and day hikes, if I remember right, but still sounded pretty rugged. I think it took them several years to get it all, but it still sounded...

Getting towed near Mt. Tremont trailhead

Yikes. I parked on the side of the road at the Nancy Pond Trailhead on Sunday, since the parking area wasn't plowed out. Glad I didn't come back to a missing car :) Maybe next time I'll park at the Sawyer River Road parking area and walk the road a little.

    A winter Long Trail attempt?

Well yeah. No one ever said anything about going the whole way without stopping. Er... except Roy.

    A winter Long Trail attempt?

Yeah, the LT can be a nightmare in winter on day hikes... Backpacking would be a beast. But I think it's far from impossible. The snippet of info in the article says they're taking 2 months, so that's an average of 4.5 miles a day. Of course, throw in a handful of zero days, and the average...

    A winter Long Trail attempt?

My mom just sent me a link to this article. Anyone know any more about this? Trail journal, blog, etc? Winter LT is something I've thought of before as being pretty sweet. I hope the attempt turns into a good story.

    Whisperlights in Winter

On a NOLS course in 2005, my group got a bunch of whisperlites working at -34 one morning. The lighters wouldn't light until they'd been heated in a pocket for a minute or two, and then the coleman fuel wouldn't light until the lighter's flame had been held to it for a few seconds, but once it...

A fine weekend to start the season

Petch: I used a new EMS Mountain Light Zero bag, along with my puffy jacket, down pants, and all my extra layers :) Review of the bag is coming up next week. Audrey: My first experience on Bromley was 2007, so I guess I'm too young... Sounds like some of the AT shelters in the south.

A fine weekend to start the season

Very interesting! I'll have to look into this book. Vanished NE towns are a pretty interesting piece of history, I think. I definitely appreciate campsites with easily accessible sunrise spots. Guyot is phenomenal as well!

A fine weekend to start the season

No! That's one of the best views in Southern VT! Stratton and Glastenbury are my favorite spots on the AT in Vermont. The shelter right by Glastenbury is one of the best places to go for an overnight with a great view of sunrise... well, 0.2 miles from the shelter to the fire tower. Can't be beat!

A fine weekend to start the season

Thought some of you might enjoy this-- last weekend I got out on my snowshoes and microspikes for the first time this season, one trip to Glastenbury Mountain in Vermont, and then a dayhike to North Kinsman. Great weather, if a bit chilly on sunday morning (-18 at camp), and good times. The...

Your ideal fantasy long distance trail...

Doesn't the Northern Forest Canoe Trail do that, except not through the mountains, exactly? As far as ADK and Green Mountains, another one I'd thought of several years ago was to start southbound on the Long Trail, continue on the AT to New Jersey, then take the Long Path north to the Catskills...

Your ideal fantasy long distance trail...

Yes indeed! I totally fell in love with that area, too. Great trails and campsites, not to mention the ponds and river.

Your ideal fantasy long distance trail...

I dream about these kinds of things way too often :) Here's one I thought of not long ago that I thought would be pretty beautiful. If the trails really existed, and there were campsites, a few lookout towers, and so on, I'd do this over just about anything. The Cohos Trail seems like one...

A night at the Cat House! (Garfield Shelter), Jan 7/8, 2012

It looks lovely out there... sad I missed it. But I'm happy to see there's snow SOMEWHERE in this state ;) Glad you finally got to bag Galehead in the winter, too. The last attempt was pretty fantastic, even if it didn't include that mountain.

    Hogback (VT) open to bikes

Interesting. I've driven by the area a few times and never knew there were trails there. Good view from Route 9, though. I'll have to check it out sometime soon... How's the hiking around there?

4Ks with Structures (Past or Present)

I've heard this before as a reason it's not a 4000 footer, but the current elevation is around 3860. They would have had to take a heck of a lot off the top for it to have been 4000 feet before. The mountain sure doesn't look like it had that much taken off ;)
