Trails: North Twin Trail, North Twin Spur, Twinway, Frost Trail, Garfield Ridge Trail, and Gale River Trail Date of Hike: Jan. 3, 2013 Trail Conditions: We were fortunate, barring a few drifted-in or scoured sections on the saddle between the peaks, that All Trails were broken and the...

The Kinsmans via Mt Kinsman and Kinsman Ridge Trails - 12/29

Date of Hike: Dec. 29, 2012 Trail Conditions: All crossings on the Mt Kinsman Trail were fully bridged and supportive. There were no blowdowns noted on either trail. Trail surfaces were mostly packed out though not fully hard where they were. Traction with snow shoes was excellent, though...

Needing Current Snow Amounts for Our End of the World Hike

From what I experienced yesterday there was no rain in the high ups, just snow, but there was rain at the hairpin turn on the Kanc and somewhat higher (with a sleet band between the two), so I would imagine the trails at that elevation, that of Greeley Ponds Trail, would be slushy to crusty...

Needing Current Snow Amounts for Our End of the World Hike

Didn't have an icing problem so that was good, but thanks for the tip. We did end up doing another hike (the Hancocks) since the forecast was so crappy. Had a good hike. Here's a trail conditions report.

North and South Hancock via Hancock Notch, Cedar Brook, and Hancock Loop Trails

Date of Hike: Dec. 21, 2012 (winter, started the hike after 6:12 am) Trail Conditions: There was roughly 6-8" at the start of Hancock Notch Trail and with snowshoes it was easy walking (though as you read this it is now saturated and a real heavy mess since the rains came in the afternoon). The...

Needing Current Snow Amounts for Our End of the World Hike

24" at Gray Knob, wow! Thanks guys, that's a huge help. Snow shoes it is, and it looks like I'll be banging them clean a lot.

Needing Current Snow Amounts for Our End of the World Hike

Planning a big (mostly below-treeline due to the forecast winds) multipeak day on the northern rim of the Pemi tomorrow and was wondering what to expect for snow depths on the trail. We're thinking there has been significant snowfall since on Moriah on the 14th, enough to require snowshoes, but...

How Do I Sharpen my Microspikes?

Well, two hikes since I sharpened them. Moriah via the long way (13.9 miles), and up to HoJos via Tuck for Avy school -- totally worth my 15 minutes since they worked quite well on both hikes. @Tim: Sorry to hear that. At $60-a-pop that hurts. :(

Lost: Thin glove liners - Rattle River Shelter

I lost a pair of super thin black glove liners, EMS brand if I recall, somewhere between Rattle River Shelter and the Rattle River TH lot on Rt 2... I think. If someone finds them I'd appreciate a call. My home phone is 603-942-5595, just leave a message (or PM me here if a member). Thanks! Mike

How Do I Sharpen my Microspikes?

My Microspikes are wicked dull after about 30 peaks of use so I just ordered some Hillsound Trail Crampons -- they look a bit more aggressive and have more teeth. They had to be ordered, however, so I decided to take a file to my old 'spikes in the meantime. Using a bench vice I was able to put...

What to use to carry my Hillsounds Pro and BD Contact Crampons

I use a really tough, old plastic bag leftover from something else. Works good by protecting other pack contents from sharp points and melt water. Once I break them out for the day I usually hang them from a 'biner if I remove them. ETA: I would also like to add that I store them point-to-point...

Jefferson, Adam, Madison via Caps Ridge Tr. (up) and Howker Ridge Tr. (down) - 12/12

Date of Hike: Dec. 12, 2012 Trail Conditions: Since the road was still open, we decided this would be a good hike for today. We started the day at the trailhead well before dawn. There was a dusting of snow in the lot. The Caps Ridge Trail was in great shape: The aforementioned dusting with a...

    High-Pointing in the Conch Republic

Oh, I know. I am taking an Avy 1 course this weekend and I suspect it's just not going to be as much fun without snow.
