    AT/Rondonee question

I'm confused every time I hear someone talk of a "tele" set up. When I went to the AMC Boston Ski Open house a few weeks ago I was told that telemark is a type of turning style, not a type of ski or binding. Or maybe they said something else and I just have a thick skull... I...

    Whites - Lonesome Lake

The best suggestion I can give (since everyone has covered everything else above) is the route you take to the hut. I much prefer parking at the Basin and taking the Basin-Cascades & Cascade Brook trails to get to the hut. This adds about 1 mile over the standard route (from Lafayette...

    Deciding between winter jackets

Thanks for all of the replies. I decided to keep the Dragon jacket and wore it on my Tri-Pyramids hike Saturday. It worked great, both the pit zips and the hood were most welcome. As for the fleece, that's a good call too, I don't need so many jackets with hoods so I went back to carrying my...

    Deciding between winter jackets

I'm having trouble deciding between what jackets to use for winter hiking, with occasional above-treeline travel. I've been winter hiking for three seasons but have never spent any extended time hiking above treeline. I generally wear a base layer on top, then a long-sleeve wicking shirt. If...

    Bobby- serious news

That's great news, considering what the news was to start with - thanks for the update Tony.

    Easy 4k footer on 1/8

Just a few things... Webster isn't a 4K (3910'), you may be thinking of Jackson, which is right next to Webster. Willey, while a 4K, isn't one of the easier ones if you're just going to do it alone. To do it alone, you'd have to go up the Willey Range trail from the south, which means about...

    Ethan Pond Shelter: Still Usable?

I passed by there on a day trip at the end of October and the shelter was in good shape. I can't provide a link to my pictures because Webshots is blocked here at work, but here's a trip report that contains a link to my pictures. I'm pretty sure I have a picture of the shelter in there which...

What did you do in 2009?

Finished the 48 on Madison, as mentioned above. Hiked up Washington with Kevin, Judy & Emma for the "Seek the Peak" event to raise money for the MW Observatory. First time hiking from PNVC, and first time I've seen Tuckerman Ravine. Followed up this tiring day with a hike to Isolation the...

    Microspikes vs. 6 pointers

I'd say it's redundant....I don't think you'll find much difference with the Microspikes. If you're already carrying those 6-pointers "just in case" throughout the fall, there's probably no need to spend more money. Then again, redundancy has never stopped me from buying new gear. ;)

Lost hiker benighted on Saturday night

Seems to me that this is an argument about semantics. Perhaps he wasn't "rescued" in the same sense that other people have needed a true rescue, but as Waumbek rightly says, the F&G officers put themselves out there in the same conditions as the lost hiker. Their actions are commendable, and...

    Highland Center?

I just checked online and the prices for a private 2-person room with a shared bath are $57/night for AMC members, $77 for non-members. But that goes up to $96 for members/$130 for non-members if you add in a private bath. That's a lot of extra cash just to have a little more privacy. It also...

    Highland Center?

I've found the price for using the bathrooms to be very reasonable. :D

    Mt. Clinton Road Parking Lot

Like bryan, I've also always parked across the street at the Highland Center even in the summer, or just off the road (if it's plowed well enough in winter) right next to the Highland Center but closer to the old Crawford Depot building. I've heard that the Mt. Clinton Rd. parking lot is a bad...

    I need a good hat

I have that type of Mountain Hardwear hat, that's my primary hat - it's nice and warm. I also love my Mad Bomber hat. Yes, it can sometimes be too hot for hiking but above treeline it's nice. Also kept me fairly warm on a sub-zero day last January with 25-mph winds. If you're just going to...

Mt. Chocorua - Piper Trail Maintenance

Thanks for doing this! I love Chocorua and have been there twice, but both times I went from the other side. I'll have to try out the Piper trail sometime and check out your handiwork. ;)

Hoping for that snow to come....I've had enough of leaves covering rocks and roots. Bring on the winter weather! :D

Relocation of Gale River trail in 2010

Someone on another forum posted this and I thought it was interesting enough to pass along. Sorry if this has already been discussed, I did a search and couldn't find any posts on it. The latest Schedule of Proposed Actions for the WMNF indicates that the Gale River trail could be relocated to...

    microspikes or crampons

Looking forward to this report....I was just looking at these in the Hillsound.com website and came over here to VFTT to see if anyone was reporting anything about these. As far as I can tell (difficult just from pictures), the spikes are longer and possibly sharper than Microspikes, but not as...
