TrishandAlex Day up on Moosilauke remains my favorite day of Summer 2009. Alex can take all the time she wants with a thank-you -- the thanks really should go to you two for creating such a memorable event for so many people. Your recent Trip Report with Sage causes me to ask you for a bit of...

Lonesome Lake with Sage, Sept 26-27

Trish, these reports with Sage, and all those you posted with Alex, take me back as well as forward in the best, sweetest way -- back to hiking when my kids were small and forward to hiking with grandchildren (which is actually happening now). Keep 'em coming!

    Cannon the quiet way 9-26-09

Miles: Approx. 10 Time: 6 hours Elevation gain: 3,100 feet Perhaps you, too, are bored or even frustrated by the usual routes up Cannon Mountain: the long grind, broken only by the novelty of a ladder, up the Hi-Cannon Trail; the route past Lonesome Lake that includes the stiff climb up from...

Thank you for the green spot, Mark. It is indeed wonderful country out that way -- glad your recent hike got to cover some of it.

Winter Wonderland on Eisenhower - 2009.09.19

I'm glad this hike turned out so well for both of you! Thank you for the terrific report. (Man, I love the Dry River country so much. Tuckerman does to.)

Thank you for the green spot -- I really appreciate your thoughtfulness. Regarding the addition of Tuckerman's reports for dogs, it occurred to me a while ago that dogs see our hikes much differently than we do. For example, there can never be too much mud! And then there are the water issues...

    Strangest trail activity you've observed?

Not in NH but in California many years ago I turned the corner on a trail and nearly walked right over a bare-assed couple actively engaged in flagrante delicto in the middle of the path. I was with a date too but, alas, the scene was not an inspiration for her.

    The Walls of Jericho 09-07-09

A family event over the long Labor Day weekend prevented Tuckerman and me from taking a major hike (just as well; crowded trails don't attract me), but on Monday we were able to stretch our legs on the Jericho Road Trail up to Cooley Hill, just south of Easton, NH. The climb is gentle and the...

    Blame the Rocket Blues! 8/30/09

Did I miss the group "Nyuk nyuk nyuk"? Oh well, if I did -- NYUK NYUK NYUK, Rocket Man! Here are three photos from the Blue whack portion of Sunday's Moose climb: Up close and personal with the spruce: Paradox (at right) writing, others thinking (evil thoughts): But una_dogger makes it all...

Dave, what a pleasure to finally meet you on Sunday and spend time together walking and talking (and talking again at MadRiver's place). I really enjoyed our conversation. Thanks!

Not sure about a hike this weekend. We're hosting a picnic with family on Sunday and we'll need Saturday to prepare. On Monday one of my nephews has hinted about a Bonds Traverse, which may or may not happen. If it doesn't, that might be our day for a hike. How about you, Michael and Terra...

Really enjoyed finally meeting you, Michael and Terra too. Let's not make this the last time we're on a mountain together. Tuck already misses Terra!

our 48 finish now on SUNDAY (30th)

That is really the truth. Here's a shot of the community, 50 strong, Alex and her family brought together on the summit of Moosilauke to celebrate TrishandAlex's remarkable accomplishment: And not just people -- dogs love Alex too (there were at least four among the summit crowd):

Trish and Alex's after party changed to Sunday 08-30-09

Still planning on it! Two of us (plus dog, I think). MadRiver, could you post driving directions to your home? Or send them in a PM?

Bald Mountain via Weetamoo Trail, NH, 08/26/09

Time to confess. Those cracks were formed when *I* sang "When a Man Loves a Woman" in my very best-est Michael Bolton voice. You should have seen the rockslide that happened, too.

    Ken Burns - Nat'l Parks

For a total picture, I highly recommend reading the new book by investigative historian Mark Dowie titled "Conservation Refugees: The Hundred-Year Conflict Between Global Conservation and Native Peoples." Much of the book focuses on situations in the (so-called) Third World, but it necessarily...
