Looking for an aggressive weekend trip

If you want aggressive, the section of the Mt Tripyramid Trail that climbs the North Slide to North Tripyramid is one of the steepest in the Whites, gaining 1,200 feet in a half-mile. Going down the South Slide is only marginally less steep.

What do you find helpful in Trail Conditions?

This may open a can of worms, but... For those of us who carry cell phones for emergency-only use when we hike, a note in a Trail Conditions report about cell coverage would be quite useful. Coverage is very spotty in the Whites, as anyone who carries a cell knows, but there are regions where...

    My Dog's Better'n Your Dog, My dog's Better'n Yours...

Today's warm, humid weather caused me to recall the chill, refreshing days of winter and those bracing hikes in snowshoes and spikes. Tuckerman made his first real hike in the snow, back in February when he wasn't yet six months old. We climbed Bald Peak -- just a 4.5-mile up-and-back, nothing...

Thank you for the green spot, Chip. Aren't all these dogs great? I've hiked with Tuckerman only since February of this year (he's just eight months old), but already I wonder how I hiked so many years without a dog.

Thank you for the green spot, Sabrina. Terra, wow, what a beautiful dog -- and what a hiker, too, judging from the photos. All these dogs are great, aren't they?

Thanks for the green spot, Jeremy. I *finally* figured out how to load photos into my posts! Tuckerman and I look forward to meeting you on the trail soon... Tuck isn't much of a beer drinker, so he'll probably skip the next C-Man gathering, alas.

    My Dog's Better'n Your Dog, My dog's Better'n Yours...

What a great idea for a thread, Paradox. Thanks for starting it, and I'm anxious to see more photos of the dogs we've come to know and love here on VFTT. My hiking partner, Tuckerman, came from a shelter in Vermont -- he was found with his brother in the woods in Virginia last fall. He's mostly...

I met a fellow last summer up on Moriah who told me that Steve Smith, guidebook author, told him the Moriah Brook Trail from the east side is one of the most beautiful routes in the Whites, and reaching Moriah by this way would include that lovely section of the Carter-Moriah Trail that you and...

Kinsman Cross II: The northern end, 6/7/09

Trails, east to west: Whitehouse, Cascade Brook, Lonesome Lake, Kinsman Ridge, Mt. Kinsman. Total mileage: 11.8 Time needed: 7 hours No. of people encountered: 25 Conditions: After a rainless week, everything's in pretty great shape. A few mud bogs, but nothing that can't be got around easily...

Crossing Kinsman II: The Northern Route 6/7/09

Tuckerman's legs are too short, his arms aren't really arms, there's that amusing but funky habit of sticking his head out the window, and there's the problem, too, of no opposing thumbs -- Tuck will never, I fear, master a stick shift. Since he and I generally hike as a pair without other...

    Remembering Starr King

Today's NY Times carries a nice commentary by Lawrence Downes about Thomas Starr King, namesake of the Pliny Range peak near Mt. Waumbek and also of a challenging, Class 5 peak in the Sierra Nevada in California. The occasion of the editorial is the removal, in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol...

    Insect Repellents..."DEET vs. The World"

Just a follow-up note... I've used the picardin-containing repellent I bought over the winter from Skin Technology in New Zealand (referenced above) for a couple of weeks now, and it has very effectively kept away mosquitoes and black flies, at least from me it has. Caveat: mosquitoes have...

Larisa, I believe I'm woefully late in thanking you for the green spot for the Lafayette & Memory TR. But thank you! I really appreciate your reading of these TRs, especially when they tend to meander off-topic. I'm thinking about writing my next few TRs in strict haiku, just to stay focused!

Mark, many thanks for the green spot for the Lafayette TR. And, sheesh, I'm sorry I didn't immediately get the reference to "Tuckerman." We've got to bring you two, man and dog, together out on the trail soon. See you at the next C-Man event?
