Looks like an out and back if your doing the Knife Edge this Year

I wonder if the next trail to close up there will be the Cathedral trail? Some of those routes up Katahdin are sketchy in terms of loose rock and massive steepness.

    171mph on Mt. Washington, Feb 25, 2019

Fair enough. I think that Australia's wind had been doping and was on steroids though, so that wind should nonetheless be disqualified from the record! :D

    171mph on Mt. Washington, Feb 25, 2019

In my opinion, Washington still holds the record. The Cyclone (hurricane) in Australia should be disqualifying for the same reasons that Tornados are discounted in terms of this record. As far as non-Hurricane/Tornado circumstances, Washington holds the wind speed record.

    171mph on Mt. Washington, Feb 25, 2019

Doesn’t Mount Washington still have the World Land wind speed record? 171 MPH is awesome! Would be fun to go get a tattoo up there right now Lol.

POLL: Is there anything more annoying than this?

Fair enough! Good point :) This thread was a bit tongue in cheek and facetious, I just think it's silly when there is a ___ place depicting ___ mountain and it's just so off. Like a Himalaya shirt with a backdrop photo of the Dead Sea.

POLL: Is there anything more annoying than this?

When you see a patch of a mountain, state, or mountain range and the imagery looks absolutely nothing like the climate or geology of it. I saw a Vermont patch that showed mountains which looked like the Austrian Alps and it really frosts my ass. I remember seeing one for the Catskills and they...

One big Icy Mess up North

Vermont got a ton of snow this week, especially northern Vermont, so I will be out with my 40" mega snowshoes (canoes) this weekend! Interesting about Western Maine, definitely sounds accurate!

One big Icy Mess up North

It's so bizarre - I climbed Elephant Mountain (3772') in Maine Saturday and there was virtually no evidence that it had rained. I know it did in fact rain up there last week, but the snow was almost all unconsolidated powder with negligible crust. It felt like such an anomaly.

Maine: Defying the laws of science

I would have thought that the torrential Noah's Ark rainstorm we had last week, with subsequent dropping temperatures, would have consolidated and hardened up the snow. So I trucked up to Maine on Saturday to climb Elephant Mountain 3772'. Defying the laws of science, I quickly found that last...

Looking like a real snowstorm on Sunday

I'll never forget the 48 inch storm we got in Wilmington Vermont in 2010. I've never seen that much piled up. Looking forward to this weekend's storm! Going to be Coooolllld, especially on Monday!

    POLL: Your longest day?

Well you were accepted and competed in Barkley so that says it all right there. My friend is good friends with Gary Robbins. Gary ran the 93 mile Wonderland trail in less than 19 hours, yet even he couldn't finish the Barkley. As extreme as it gets!!

    POLL: Your longest day?

Good Lord!:eek::eek::eek::eek: Some of these are just shockingly long! When I had my longest day, (16 hrs), to imagine tacking on another 10-12 hours would have made me start to hallucinate and try cut my own arm off like in that 127 hours movie!

    POLL: Your longest day?

POLL: What is the longest day you've ever had hiking? I've never broken 16 hours. 16 was the longest marathon hike I've ever endured when I climbed Marcy, Gray, Skylight, Haystack, Basin and Saddleback in the ADKs. The Catskill Bushwhack range took me 15 1/2 hours: Wittenburg, Cornell...

Stairway to Hell! Anderson/Lowell/Duck Pond on 2nd Dec. from northern approach

This is one of my favorite trip reports ever. Blast from the past. Lowell and Anderson are indeed New Hampshire's stairway to hell!!

    Winter Rescue on Katahdin

I can imagine the route being nearly impossible to find in those conditions. Above treeline, whiteout, it just makes navigation nearly impossible. Glad they're ok, definitely could've ended much worse. I snowshoed and broke out 5.5 miles on the Long Trail this weekend and finding where the hell...

    2018 Grid finishers

Whoever claimed it was fun?! I whack through a phantasmagoric snarled hellscape of soul crushing conifers and blowdown every week of my life and I've never enjoyed a minute of it! It's great, I love it!

Winds were cranking early this morning.

I saw Mount Washington was getting 100+ MPH winds yesterday. Driving through Crawford Notch yesterday my car felt like it was going to be blown off the road. I headed to the Northeast Kingdom in Vt and climbed East Haven Mountain which was super windy at the summit, even despite the trees.

    2018 Grid finishers

48 Winter season after age 75 is really impressive too. I agree with Daytrip, every year the bar gets raised. Anyone know oldest person to ever become a 48 finisher?

Big Moose (Maine) and Brosseau Mtn (Norton, - among the best Vermont mountains)

Like any true good bushwhacker should, I put 1,040 miles on my car this weekend. Haha! I trucked up to Greenville Maine Friday night and stayed at the Moose Mountain Inn which was an awesome motel because I knew how to use the remote control for the TV readily and easily. All hotels should be...

The Lookout AT shelter in VT

I would email the Green Mountain Club. Even though this is off the Long Trail, they would either know, or be able to link you up with someone who knows. There is a lot of snow at the higher elevations in Vermont right now FYI.
