Trail Runners Rescued from Mt Lafayette

Good discussion and posts, interesting to read. I subscribe to the Kenny Rogers rule of thumb as applied to summiting: "you gotta know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em." Another rule of thumb is to remember that even if you do reach the summit in bad weather, the hike ain't over...

Trail Runners Rescued from Mt Lafayette

Hang on a sec....I get the point that her other big climbs were on guided trips and the hard decisions were made for her. But don't most, if not all, guided trips involve educational components about safety and decision-making? In addition, this was a bright person, and even though she wasn't...

Trail Runners Rescued from Mt Lafayette

The Kate Matrosova story is so baffling. She had climbed Denali, Elbrus and other massive peaks. But on the day she went into the Presidentials she wasn't carrying snowshoes, a bivy or sleeping bag. It's so perplexing how an extremely experienced climber would omit these items and choose to go...

Trail Runners Rescued from Mt Lafayette

I have noticed an uptick in foolish unprepared hikers lately. For example, I saw 4 dudes the other day - sneakers and jeans, no masks, no snowshoes and deep snow at 3300'. They had no idea what they had gotten into. I think it's possible COVID is prompting more people to get outside (which is...

Mask mandate on Federal property, including WMNF

Since the COVID spike this fall, I feel like people have been very conscientious about keeping distance on trails or putting on a mask when they encounter others. I'm pretty impressed by it. I don't think this new mandate will change much because it's already been happening.

Access to Doubletop and Graham in the Catskills now forbidden

I think a wiser and more equitable solution would have been to open the mountains on 2-3 weekends a year, instead of closing them off altogether. That's similar to what they do for Charles Mound in Illinois. This would strike a healthy balance between allowing the mountains to rejuvenate their...

    2020 Grid and Related Finishers

7 rounds of the Grid? I am assuming that is the most, or has someone done it more times than that? I was also particularly impressed with the 48 in winter over age 75. Someday I want to do Owl's Head by bushwhacking from the back of Lincoln; I think that would be a fun approach.

2" of rain predicted in the whites on Friday

I wonder how the Catskills are going to do out of this - they got some of the most snow out of this last storm. There are now flood watches for the CATs and I imagine there's going to be massive runoff from all the snowmelt and high temperatures tomorrow.

2" of rain predicted in the whites on Friday

I've been reading about this too. Seems like the rain is coming to the entire Northeast. Temperatures in the 50s. Will be a slushy mess, especially with the places that got 40" of snow. The ice afterwards when the temperatures drop is going to probably be massive. I am going out today before...

    Snow totals for Snow-Demic 12/17/20

It is interesting how localized some of the ludicrous snowfall amounts were. My brother measured 39" inches in Danby, Vermont. It seems like some places got 40 inches and then not very far away other spots got like half of that. Really interesting storm. We capped out at 20 inches in West...

    Snow totals for Snow-Demic 12/17/20

Almost 20 inches here in Southern Vermont and still coming down, so awesome!!

Maine is rebuilding old fire towers

I would really like to see old Firetower Mountains cleaned up at the summit. On Snow Mountain (Chain Of Ponds) in Maine, there was dilapidated mess strewn everywhere including lots of spent propane tanks. It was disgusting. Similar thing with Hamilton Mountain in New York. Either rebuild the...

Any NE p2k finishers out there?

I finished the NE p2K list on Sat 10/31/20 on Black Mountain above Lake George. Black Mountain is awesome - really tremendous views of Vermont as well as up toward the high peaks. The trail is well maintained.

Wheeler Mountain near Lake Willoughby, VT

If a Vermont 52 with a view list existed, this should be on it!

Wheeler Mountain near Lake Willoughby, VT

The past couple months I have been working on continuing to climb the Vermont 500 Highest list and NH 52 With A View. On the 17th, I climbed Wheeler Mountain near Lake Willoughby. There are so many great peaks in the surrounding vicinity of the lake, many of which afford tremendous views...

    Snow

Vermont got snow, mostly above 1500'. I was near Burke on Saturday and it was pretty well covered. Hopefully this means we will have a big winter!

    Black Bobcat

I was very skeptical when I saw this because there have only been around 20 documented cases of a black bobcat. But then I saw a comparison photo of a confirmed black bobcat and it looks just like this one. So that's pretty cool, a black bobcat in Danville Vt!

Former Boston Globe editor dies on Mount Katahdin

Agreed. Especially this summer where we had basically no rain/inclement weather. It is getting extremely cold in the high elevations now to the point where you need to come prepared for winter temperatures and conditions.

    Smokey Sky from CA

I climbed Mount St. Helens in 2018 when there were wildfires regionally at that time. The air quality was horrible. My wife and I coughed, snored loudly, and hacked up nasty mess for nearly a month upon returning. The fires going on now are insane. The photos from San Francisco last week were...
