    History of Mount Willard trail?

Thanks you all! I found this cool old map online which shows both the Carriage Rd and Auto Route. I love learning the history of some of these legendary trails, especially the super old ones in the Whites.

    History of Mount Willard trail?

Yesterday I climbed Mt Avalon and Mt Willard. The Mt Willard trail almost looks like it was a road of some sort at one point. There are massive concrete culverts in the trail which are way overkill for just a hiking trail. Throughout the trail you can see that it used to be wider. Anyone know...

    Most Challenging Hike up Monadnock?

Spellman and Red Spot are the two most challenging up. Pumpelly is the longest (and best) route to the top in my opinion.

    Finished the 770>>>>

Thanks to you all, I have really enjoyed talking with so many of you over the years. The 770 was a process of one thing leading to another. I think the overwhelming majority of the 12 finishers grew into the 770 as they accumulated peaks. I am only aware of one or two finishers who may have...

    A Direttissima attempt

I saw this on WCAX as well. Best of luck to him! Definitely a lot to carry, although thank god the bugs are gone and it's not very hot. I would love to try this someday.

    Finished the 770>>>>

I finished the 770 (777) on August 15th 2020 atop Spencer Bale Mountain in Maine. It took me roughly 8 years to climb them all. To my knowledge I am the 12th finisher, and the first from Vermont to climb the 770. Thanks first and foremost to my incredible and supportive wife Renee who climbed...

Can you drive to Success Pond?

Is Success Pond Rd (NH) open and can you get up to Success Pond (or the immediate area near it)? There have been some storms lately, so I figured I'd just check first. Thanks a lot!

    Approach Shoes in the Whites

I have been using North Face gore tex shoes the past few years on drier hikes where I don’t anticipate encountering a lot of mud and I really really like them. Worth a look on their website to see what they have for a selection, but it may not be the foot support and cushioning you are looking for.

South Turner and whack to North Turner yesterday (Maine)

No sign of flagging or herd trail evidence between the two summits. No sign of human activity whatsoever. Felt really remote and wild. Nothing but bears, woods and blueberries!

South Turner and whack to North Turner yesterday (Maine)

My wife and I are on a little whackation in Whackxter State Park. I would say South Turner has the best postcard view of Katahdin. Great perspective of both Baxter and Hamlin peaks. It took me 2.5 hours to whack from S. Turner to North. The woods were surprisingly better than what I prepared...

Caribou - Smart mountains horseshoe hike (in two parts) Maine.

I've been doing a bunch of Vermont 500 Highest List mountains this summer. There are some real gems I have encountered such as Lyme Emery and Susie Peak. In the meantime, I've been working on finishing the Maine 3Ks and I have only a few left. I did the Caribou - Smart horseshoe set of...

Rumford Whitecap - Good Hike not so good Blueberries

I climbed Miles Mountain in Vermont this weekend and then Caribou Mountain in Maine. There are tons of wild blackberries and raspberries out. I probably could've shaved an hour off my hike time had I not been stopping every few minutes to pick berries. I must've eaten a pint, so good! The black...

Finished the NH 200 Highest Saturday / When your wife sets your truck on fire

We did have a saw but since the top of the tree portion blocking the road wasn't that big we thought it would be quicker to just jump out, yank it back and proceed. Next time I will definitely take the extra time to saw it out!

Finished the NH 200 Highest Saturday / When your wife sets your truck on fire

I finished the NH 200 Highest on Scott Bog Peak Saturday. West Prospect and Perry Ponds Peak: First we took the Day Rd out of Pittsburg to Perry Stream Rd for like 6000 miles north. We parked at the end of the road along the Perry Stream, which is about 0.9 miles below the 4th Connecticut...

Fun hiking project during 2 months of Coronavirus - Monadnock red line

Dave: I actually thought about if all the trails could be climbed in one continuous day hike. I don't think it would be possible because of a) the distance apart of the trail heads at the bottom of the mountain and b) The amount of back-tracking one would have to do would make it much, much...

Fun hiking project during 2 months of Coronavirus - Monadnock red line

Since March 13th when everything shut down, I decided to take on a little hiking project to help get through the doldrums of this pandemic. I live in Vermont only around 20 miles from Mount Monadnock, so I decided to climb every trail on the Official Monadnock Map. I just finished red-lining the...

If Washington was another 1000' would it be glaciated?

Interesting about the Fog being a prime reason why a year-round snowpack couldn't stay. I wonder though if a higher elevation would somehow mean less fog. I nonetheless think that if every elevation was raised by 1,000' (The summit of Mount Washington, the base of all the ravines, etc) that...

If Washington was another 1000' would it be glaciated?

We received 3-4 inches of snow near where I live in Southern Vermont on Mother's Day Weekend. It got me thinking: If Mount Washington was 1000' taller, would it be permanently glaciated or permanent ice/snow in some capacity? Sometimes when I drive past Washington on Route 302 late in the...

    Mountain biker jumps the Cog

This video would be cooler if instead, it was the Cog train that jumped the mountain biker, landing aligned back on the tracks, and then continued on down. Ps - Man I bet Red Bull shelled out a lot for this one.
